very high fuel pressure
My Kirkham with SA 427 SO usually runs about 5-6 psi of fuel pressue with either the mech or e-pump (Holley "Red") and any combination. The other day while driving home in reg street traffic (25mph, stop lights, etc), I had to stop for a train and decided to shut the car off while waiting. I don't know the fuel pressure at that point, but it was hard to restart and when it did, the pressure was 12#!! The e-pump was off all of this time and I drove the next two miles home, where it took several minutes, even with the ignition off, to drop from 12 to zero. I haven't had a chance to gather more info, but it was a very hot day (92 °F) and my temp gauge read 100° C. This has never happend before, any ideas? (the pump is self regulated to 7#, but, as noted, it was off and upstream anyhow). thanx again. thanx steve meltzer "never enough time to do it right; always enough time to do it over"

Check your fuel filter Steve (if you have an inline fuel filter).

Do you have an unvented gas tank? If so, rising temperatures could build up pressure in the tank (and lines to the engine) that would not be reduced until the running engine removed and used some fuel from the tank.

Do you have a return line to the fuel tank? What you described is what happenned to me the first few times I took my car out. As I drove more and the engine got hotter along with the day getting warmer, the pressure kept rising until the needle was all the way to the needle stop. Talked with Tom Kirkham and he mentioned that the fuel sitting in the line perhaps was getting heated up by the headers and engine. Probably close to vapor lock, which might explain why you couldn't get your car started right away. Something to think about and look into.

I have the setup that Kirkham sent with the roller. I don't remember a return line from the mech pump to the tank, but ?? could be. What did Tom say to do? Did this resolve? David Ingalls, who has a Kirkham, had the same problem and it was some air in the line between the isolator and the gauge itself. thanx s

The tank isn't vented and the fuel filter is a Holley Volumaxx. I'll check that. thanx steve (BTW, I love the '63 SWC...steve, '62, '67 and '70 LT-1 'Vettes)

If the situation happens again, open the gas cap and see what happens. If the pressure immediately drops, the unvented gas tank is the cause.
