Water pump / alternator question
I was visiting a friend yesterday who runs a "dirt" modified car powered by a small block Chevy. He does not run any alternator as the extra belt, brackets, etc are too much of a pain. Once the engine is started, the only draw on the battery is the MSD box and a small fan that supplies fresh air to the driver's helmet. Of course they always have to keep the battery fully charged which can be a problem at the track.
He recently heard that there is a water pump on the market that contains a small (about 15 amp output) internal alternator. He doesn't know the make and has not been able to find out any further information about it. 15 amps would be perfect for his application.
Has anyone heard of, or seen, this type of water pump? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
