need noncobra tech help
hey there, thanks for having a look. I just bought a used modern car (jaguar) and I am thinking of getting a code reader so I can see what type of errors I am getting (if/when). Anyone have any ideas on brand, features, price, etc. I know some of you guys have cars other than cobras I am really interested in getting one that can clear simple codes like the gas cap error code.
thanks
Buzz

AutoTap
Buzz,
I use an AutoTap. It is a reader and software that runs with your laptop. You can purchase various software modules to read/decode different brands of vehicles.
Be prepared for pricing. To get all the advanced codes, not just the emissions ones, you will have to shell out some $$$

No experience, but a site to obtain some comparisons, Might want to check with a Jag Service Manager to determine if the codes in your year Jag are compatibile with whatever device is purchased and the device has the Jag codes needed.

I have an AutoXray, it cost a lot, it came with GM, Ford, Chrysler and a universal cables, it should read all OBD-I and OBD-II codes it is also upgradeable to the upcoming (OBD3 codes) corrected by Ibr8k4vetts, CAN which stands for Controller Area Network, which is the new protocol to be in effect by 2008

the AutoXray can reset the computer and alarms on the OBD-II and the new CAN, you can make other adjustments with it also, like I said it isn't cheap, the Dodge dealer charged me $150.00 to hookup their computer to my truck, I ordered the AutoXray the next day, I paid somewhere around $400.00 for it, if you work on a new car it is a must to have a code reader

Not having any prior experience with these devices, are the codes common for all makes, both domestic and imported, or can the device can be loaded with make/brand specific codes ? What happens when a different make/brand is purchased, can the device be loaded with new data ?
Goes back some time, it was mentioned that some makes/brands do not release their codes, still exists today ?

Anything to do with the turning on a "check engine light" are common codes, but alot of other codes will show up. Hope this helps

the AutoXray requires you to enter certain letters from the vin number, this makes it pacific to the auto you are working on, I have only used it a couple of times, it works great, the book that comes with it gives you the meaning of the codes
