sidepipe seal
I have headers that slip into my sidepipes. So far I have not been able to get them to seal properly. I have cleaned both sides of the pipes on the headers and the side pipes and used Permatex Ultra Copper in a quarter inch thick ring. I put the ring about one quater inch from where the headers bottom out slipping into the sidepipes (four into four pipes). I allowed the seal to set up for about 24 hours.
Is there a better application method? Should I be using a different product?
I am open for suggestions.
Thanks for the help in advance.

Coach Mike,
We use regular old wheel bearing grease on the JBL slip fit headers.
Just glop it on and start the engine and let it run long enough for the smoke to stop and cut it off.
Note: The fits have to be good and a true slip fit. IE: .015 per inch Dia. clearance max. (This is the standard as used for piston aircraft exhaust systems and works well so far on mild steel headers. If you use Inconel, the clearances can be tighter and you need no grease.)
I would check your fits and adjust to the above numbers. Any good muffler shop will be able to do this for you..

Let me get this straight. I can leave the pipes on the car and put axle grease on the top of the slip ins, start the car and let it run down into the fittings as the engine is running. Once the fitting stop smoking I cut the engine off. If my fitting are larger than your specs (.015) then I may have to perform this procedure more than once. This will seal the pipes?
Thanks, Coach Mike

I cut some slits in them so I could compress them once I slid them onto the headers and used these wide clamps. Works fine.

Great idea. Where did you get the clamps? Is that all you did, cut the slips and then apply the clamps?
Thanks, Coach Mike

You can get the clamps in varous widths from Summit, Jegs, JC Whitney, etc.
They are very thin stainless and actually shape to the pipes. The only thing to do after install is cutoff the excess threads from the bolts. You could use a sealer but I didn't.
I had to take them off twice and worried that the bolts would be too short but once they are 'shaped' they go back on with no problem.

Coach Mike,
You need to put the grease on before you slide them on.
If your pipes have too much clearance, they will not seal no matter what you put on them.
If your primaries are 1.75 Dia. then the proper clearance will be .0265 >.0300 in. With these clearances, you will not need a sealer just as rblong states.

I bought my side pipes and headers from ShellValley, I never could get them to seal, so I welded on flanges, bought them from Finishline

When I put mine together I used a good grade of furnace cement. It will take the high heat and seals the joints. NO LEAKS !

Sidepipe seal
Interesting thead,
I have a set of slip joint primaries and slip in to collectors, the side pipes were made by Chris @ SPD exhaust and a real nice fit!
I wish to HPC the pipes to make them last longer and reduce heat, so I am wondering with the pipes being a nice quite tight slip fit, the high performance coating may inhibit assembly, or the answer might be to coat them assembled!
Any tips appreciated.

You can sand or grind after application or even possibly tape off the area before application.

sidepipe seal
Rick,
Having not worked with the stuff, your recommendation is quite simple - thanks!
