Ford 9" Rear Gear Lube Removal Hints

I am changing the ring and pinion in my 9" rearend and wonder if anyone has any "Not so Messy" hints to get the gear lube out that remains in the housing after the center section has been removed!
A latex glove and a dixie cup with a bunch of rags does not sound like a good time on the cold garage floor!

Any suggestions would be most welcome!!

There are suctioning devices made to extract oil, I have used several types of them, check at your local parts supply house, or I know Snap-on and tool companies like that have them. jimig@standardtransmission.com

I wouldn't worry about what is left in there unless you had a major failure. You could always drill a hole and tap it for a small bolt with a nylon washer.

Pela oil extractor. Great for lawn and garden equipment too and not very expensive.

In my 69 Cobra I had the dealer do as Clois suggested and it has a drain plug now on the bottom. Never had a problem and it beats trying to suck it out with any of the devices I have seen around here. When I asked the dealer about doing that when he ordered it, he said that sounds like a good idea.

You can buy an oil pan drain plug kit for an automatic transmission oil pan and drill a hole and install it. Have fun!! sharpe 1
