Default Ford nine inch Trac-Lok

I have a ford nine inch open differential I am going to install a posi unit into. On EBay V.S. Custom Diffs advertises a 9" Ford Trak-Lok 28 spline posi unit? Has anyone used this item or dealt with this company?

The Trak-Lok uses friction clutches trying to find out if it is a 2 or 4 spring unit (different torque rating) street or strip application.

If you are looking to turn your open diff into a locker, there are two kits you can buy. One is the Powertrax Limited Slip, made by Richmond, and the other is the Powertrax Lock-Rite, also made by Richmond. Both of these devices are made to go into an open diff case, and they replace the spider gears, giving you a locking type differential. On the Ford 9" and 8", you will actually be reusing your side gears for the LockRite. The LockRite is cheaper (about $250) and is crude, but effective. It's popular with the off road guys. You will feel the rear end lock and unlock, and that takes some getting used to. The Limited Slip version costs about $450, but for that kind of money you can just get a real diff. The Limited Slip version is nicer on the street with less obvious engagement.

And also, Detriot Locker makes a version of the LockRite called the E-Z Lock. It's the same exact thing.

I would be warry of putting a real honest to goodness locker in a street car. Driving a friends rock crawler with a locker on pavement is an experience. You start out from a stoplight and turn right. About halfway through the turn there is a loud bang and the Jeep jumps a couple inches to the left. Happens every time. I would go with a limited slip for street use. Locker for drags.

I run a 9" with limited slip (OEM clutch type). If you have the option to convert it to 31 spline do so. It will require different axles but is easy to do by replacing the side gears in the differential assembly. If you are starting with a complete rear end that will have to be narrowed you will be glad you made the upgrade (to 31 spline) down the road, especially if you like to step up the horsepower. Limited slip is very street friendly.
