Hot Radiator + Velcro = Melted Adhesive
Having read some threads here about mounting a radiator screen using velcro, I built one out of stainless and aluminum and mounted it and was very pleased with the way it looked.
However after driving the car for a bit I noticed that the screen was crooked and the reason was that the adhesive had melted on the radiator side velcro allowing the screen to slip! Has anyone found an adhesive that will attach the velcro directly to the aluminum radiator tanks and not melt when heated?? |

I've always used high temp RTV.....Put a few dabs around the radiator where the screen will sit, allow it to set for a few minutes to stiffen, then push the screen into it and put another dab on top of it making sure that the screen has been embedded sufficiently. Wait a day or two for the RTV to finish setting up, and your should be good to go. Bill S. |
I have thought about the Hi Temp RTV!!
But if I want to take the screen off to clean it (Event) then I would have some wait time after I re-install it before the car could be driven!! |
Probably should use that glue again. :D
why not use the RTV to secure the Velcro? Just a suggestion. BTW, I think I have some HD velcro if you need some, let me know. It is red. |
Hi-temp RTV some steel plates on the aluminum radiator at the points of contact where your velcro melted off.
Embed some strong magnets in your radiator screen. I haven't tried this, but it seemed like a good idea. DD |
Thats an idea. Hobby stores carry rare earth magnets that would work good, and they are strong, too...strong enough to securely fasten a hatch on a radio controlled boat going 60 MPH.

I think I'm going to do the magnet thing on my ERA. I found some round magnets with a chrome bezel, with a hole in the center. I plan to RTV these to the radiator mounts, then build a radiator guard with plates for the magnets to attach, and pins to go into the holes to hold it in place---in case I hit a pothole or something.

Velcro and 3M make high temperature adhesive strips in different widths. Velcro's (0175 Adhesive- aluminum) goes up to 275 F. 3M (200MP High Performance Acrylic) has a double sided tape that handles 400 F.
