Fire Extinguisher

I have fire extinguishers in the garage, in the car and around the house which should be replaced sometime soon. What type is best around our cars? Halogen? What would do the minium damage to an engine compartment?Where can you buy them? What size?

I just called our fire chief as I am going to have to replace 4 of mine soon. Out here they won't even recharge the Halon ones any more and he said to get the ones that just have a triangle on them and say something like dry combustibles or something along that line. He told me our ACE Hardware store handles them and also Home Depot.

What about in-car systems? I have a 5 lb Racecraft system that I'm arguably getting close to having checked out and recharged just because it's been in the car too long. I was going to contact a local vendor to determine if they refill these tanks?

I was shopping for a 2.5 lb. unit for my car a couple of years ago and ran across the following supplier:

Dave recommended Halon and I bought a chrome unit from him for just over $120. Not sure of the price now, but his price was very competitive in July 2005. There were cheaper options, but he definitely recommended Halon over Halotron and other options. He was very knowledgable, so you might want to give him a call.

Last month I purchased a Safecraft Halon 2.5 lb stainless extinguisher including bracket for $130 plus shipping. I priced many places over a couple months - everything from ebay to boat yards and couldn't find a better price. I think Superformance wants $250 for a similar extinguisher.

Now I am not sure what to say. I just know that I talked to another person here and he said they told him they would not charge the Halon extinguisher he had. Maybe something to do with just this area and they can charge more for the other types. I had heard that we couldn't get the Halon ones any more and that was why I called our Fire chief.

Thanks for posting that link. It is interesting reading and I did go to a couple of the stores here that our Fire Chief recommended and they do not sell the Halon type any more. Mine in the kitchen, garage, and other places are so old that I am afraid they may not work. All I can find is the Triple type, dry something that is supposed to work on any kind of fire. Has a triangle and a couple of circles with A, B,& C inside them. A is in the triangle.

Those are fine for the garage and the house. You could use on in a pinch on the car, but they are slightly corrosive in nature and would need to be hosed down immediately to not cause further problems (other than the fire it was going to put out). For strictly a cobra based onboard set up, the AFF systems are the best as they work on the fire at the source, and do not dissipate when exposed to open air.

Thanks Bill. One more question. Some of the people here have a newer type fire suppression system in their Cobras that they say is some kind of foam and if you have to use it, all you do later is hose it off and it doesn't even ruin the carpet. Is that the AFF type system?

I could be wrong on the date but I am sure I have read in some of our mags.
that a total ban on Halon products goes into effect in 2008. They haven't
made any in several years but there are some businesses that buy and
resell the Halon 1301 (fire protection) and 1211 (car a/c's). The FM 200
and AFFF systems are the replacements for Halon. The dry chemicals
(ansul for one) is corrosive and will raise havoc with electrical systems.
My business works primarily with the water based wet pipe automatic fire sprinkler systems so I stay away from that stuff.
