Default Ring & Pinion Install/Swap

Hi experts,

I have done some searching but didn't find any good info. One thread looks like it had the answer but the links to other sites were no longer active.

Here goes.... I am thinking about changing my rear end gears (ford 8.8)
I am somewhat familiar with the process but concerned with the alignment- don't want a rear that wines or burns up!

Ring gear is easy I think just bold it on.

Do you change the bearing on the pinion?

There is only one way to shim the pinion correct ---in and out?

How do you check alignment and backlash? How much?

Is it worth just having someone do it or should I forge ahead and try something new?

Thanks for your input!

It's not really hard to do. There are 2 cast shims on the sides of the differential that MUST go in true and square to align the diff. Yes, the pinion is shimmed fore/aft only by a crush sleeve and some shims...replace the sleeve and put the shims back as they came out. If you are going to pull it, I would replace the bearings but be aware that they can be a PITA so gauge replacement against necessity. Are they noisy? Are they loose? When you're going back together you check the alignment with white grease. Put a spot in 4 places and spin the diff by hand. The 'heel' pattern is what you are looking for. You want the impression left by the pinion to be centered on the ring gear. Adjust with shims as req (you probably will not have to if you assemble the same as it came apart). About cautions; be careful not to overtighten the pinion crush sleeve! Follow the torque specs carefully (a Mustang rebuild book will give you the #'s). Finally, add some torque modifier for break in and go have some fun!

Personally, I like to replace the bearings on the carrier and pinion. After the depth is set, I usually check the book for the back lash as long as the pattern is good.

You can get a tube of "Persian Blue" ink at the AutoParts shop for checking gear patterns. Use it with one of those acid brushes to paint the gears and check the contact pattern.

As a rule, center ovals are good.

Hope this helps.

I am starting to gain a little courage with your input. Thanks!
