Rolled Edge for Sidepipe Opening

Hi Everyone,

I'll be putting the body back on later this week to cut the remaining holes and make the final adjustments before I give the body to someone to paint. I got to thinking that rolled edges around the sidepipe openings might look better and be a little stronger than just leaving the cut edges.

Has anyone done this and, if so, do you have any pictures of the results?

I'd also be interested in any suggestions on the best techniques on accomplishing this as well.

A friend of mine that painted it also did the sidepipe openings. He's a member of the forum, screen name is "Scales". Send him a pm if you're interested in how he did it. I also have pics of it in my gallery with the sidepipes installed. I like it!

That's really nice work including the paint.

I'm looking for something similar although not exactly like the sidepipe opening. Actually I'm looking to do something more like the vent opening where the lip is inside the body. In my case, I have four pipes that will be exiting the opening and will need to have a rectangular or trapaziodal opening. I'm also looking to retain the lower portion of the body itself similar to the original and SPF cars.

Thanks. Just thought I'd try to help out. Mine has all four pipes coming out too. What you want done shouldn't be too hard to accomplish by a good fiberglass guy.

So I'm guessing it probably isn't something that I should attempt myself before I give it to the shop so I don't mess things up too much at this point.

Anyone try some polished aluminum or stainless tubing cut down the center and then bent to fit over the cutouts edges. Sounds like a neat way to go but I'm sure there is a reason I haven't seen anyone do it yet.

Depends on how good you are working with fiberglass. I'm not good at it & don't like the itching anyway!

I know the guy that did mine (Scales) is great with fiberglass, he could do it. Any good fiberglass guy that knows his stuff will be able to do that for you, the trick is finding a good one.

I had thought about that as well. I don't think that you would have to cut the tubing in half though. As long as the tubing was covered with a thin covering that the resin would not stick to, I would think that the tubing could then be the pattern used to form the rolled fiberglass edge. I'm not sure if it would really work the way I'm imaging it but it sounds good.

I've thought about this as well... as the finishing on my cutouts is not the greatest. They're ok, and I'm probably the only one that notices it, but would be nice to dress it up.

I was thinking of something in polished aluminum (about 1/2" wide or so) to frame the opening... or (for something more discrete) maybe like some old door/fender trim in polished stainless steel. Lots of possibilities...

My car's at the painter now & I'm having his body guy roll the pipe cutout to the outside like Jugernauts - fiberglass. I'm having him finish the louver cutouts also. Not rolled, but something cleaner than the original cutouts. I'll try to get some pics before the paint flies.

I'm hoping to get pictures as the body prep., fiberglass mods (roll exhaust edges, louver cutout clean up, fill hood latches and install hood pins, new longer low profile hood scoop, clean up the door edges,etc) & paint progresses. I'll post'em when I get'em
