pedal assemblies, recommendations?
Hi all, I recently purchased a Cobra replica and am not sure what the pedal assembly is in the car as I am a newbie and sort of part/component stupid at this point. But I do know that whater they are it is not to my liking and feels loose and looks like cr.p.
I would really like to have all the pedals replaced with a nice looking assembly that would not break the bank. I am wondering what some of you more experienced owners/builders might recommend.
I just want a nice looking solid feeling assembly. It need not be a super, racing, high tech, or cutting edge system, Just a nice unit that will be affordable and can be installed by a good competent mechanic, but not needing a "Cobra Specialist" to install.
I would expect to tear out the existing "whatever they are" pedals and put in a factory fresh new pedal assembly or a very slightly used one. I would prefer to buy the whole pedal rack and assembly new unless that is over $300-350 or so in which case I could look to the wrecking yard I guess.
Could someone give me a few ideas of what I should be shopping for, to put in a box, and take to the local street rod mechanic and say "here's the stuff you need, could you please remove and replace this complete pedal assembly for me".
The pedals in the car now all work fine it's just the worn/junky look and loose feel of them that gets to me. So perhaps I need not replace things like master cylinders, lines, etc. just the rack and pedals themselves is what I'm after.
I know this probably sounds pretty dumb to many of you who are capable of doing all your own work but I am not a mechanic and just want to be able to enjoy the car with my wife on nice weekends. Replacing this nasty looking, loose feeling pedal group would go a long way in helping me be able to do that.
Thanks for any pointers, Don

I'm guessing Mustang II being a StreetBeast, do the pedals hang down from the top?

Yes they hang from the top. But as far as a photo goes, I will definately need to do that so you can actually see what's in the car now. The only problem is that the car is in the shop right now getting a new valve cover gasket and a pasenger side roll bar fitted, which is why I wanted to get some ideas on replacements now since it would be an opertune time to do that. I'll go over to the shop and take a couple of photos and post them here in a day if I can. But yes, they hang from the top and the gas pedal does not have much more than wide area on a steel arm. The clutch and brake have no and little rubbers of any type on them they are just ugly little steel pedals that I suppose I could find some rubbers to fit if I find out what they are exactly.
May be they just need some TLC and a little $ thrown at them. I will ask the shop as they might know what they are. They do a lot of excellent street rod building there but are not really Cobra people. More into 40s coupes and roadsters, but well done real steel chops and restorations.
I'll get more info and a photo and post it ASAP.

I drove right by you today, I could have looked at them for you. If you need help with them let me know. I could put original style pedal pads on your arms if they are OK.

Don,
Drop me an email:
jdgagnon1@juno.com
I will send you pictures of my new set up by Acton Customs. (I am past my limit on the posting of pictures) It is a set of pedals that come out from the floor of the car just like original Cobras. The AC pedals pivot on a spring and look 100% authentic. Plus they work great too....
Just a thought

I did the hanging paddle assy. thing during my build but didn't like it!. Nothing was available to mount on the frame so I fabricated a set. Wilwood had just introduced their new compact remote master cylinders, which made the fabrication possible. Even with small master cylinders I still had to tilt them for a clean flush fit. Check pictures.

Hi Mickmate, how is it that you "drove right by" me ? I am in Petaluma, CA. I thought you were in New Hamshire somewhere. Are you out here somewhere now?
Original style pads on my arms sounds OK I guess but why not just the pads that were originally on whatever these turn out to be? Wouldn't that be easier?
And Jeff, as for the "Acton Customs": Sounds like a lot more work and changes to switch to something coming out of the floor than to something similar to what is there now (only in better shape and looking a lot better), unless it would not involve drilling or cutting through the floor somehow and switching all the other parts of the whole system.
One thing I think I must make clear to all of you whom might be interested in giving me a suggestion and some guidence about the pedals is that I am NOT concerned about the "authentic" look of anything because I am not interested in this car looking "authentic".
We bought the car for something fun and beautiful to play in and be in and drive on nice warm days. Neither my wife nor myself are into the "Authenticity" of the car or it's components. We simply like Cobras because we feel the lines and overall look of the car is extreemly beautiful and the performance of high HP to low weight makes it great fun to drive. We have no focus on having it look or be "authentic" beyond that.
So something reletively easy to have put in without major surgery or changes and something that works well is the goal. Whether or not whatever that is looks in any way authentic is not a concern to us.
I hope that does not offend anyone as I know that "authenticity" is one of the greatest goals for some Cobra owners/builders, but just not for us.
I'll go by the shop and get some pics of whats in there now and post them here later today. That will help a lot I think.
Don

Did someone say "Tilton"?
I also used the Afco Girling type MC's.

Here's the pig in the car now.
Attachment 14216
Here's the setup in the car now. Does anyone know what it is? Can anyone even see it?
Also: How does Roscoe above get his photo to be so large and all this forum will allow me to upload is this tiny one??
I have decided to either dress this pig up or replace the lot with a Tilton set up like the one that Roscoe just posted above. That's a real nice looking set-up and looks do-able without too much toil and trouble.
Roscoe about how much does a set up like that one cost in terms of parts? Also: how many hours do you guess it would take a good mechanic to put something like that in the car? Any guess is better than none as I have no clue!

You have 24 posts and I have 5384.
You'll have to price it out. I did it 8-9 years ago. Mechanic? Wat dat? I did it myself. You'll have to get your mechanic to give you a price or start doing the work yourself.

Don...go search some of the forum threads for info on how to post 'LARGE' pictures. It has been asked and answered a few times.
Good luck...(especially finding a mechanic to work on these beasts...a lot of us just learned to do stuff ourselves by trial and error or by building from stratch)

I have a Wilwood hanging pedal set up I'm looking to sell. Let me know if you're interested. It is a very nice looking unit, but won't work in my scratch build and I had to go to floor mounted pedal box like the originals.

Those pedals look like the ones in my '88 5.0 mustang daily driver. That's what Street Beast is claiming they use too. the easy fix if the action is good is to replace them with another used set and pedal box...One that is less used! Mine works great on the 88 with 140,000 miles on it.

don't know about your loose feeling, but you can always upgrade the look:
www.ultimatepedals.com
I had a set of custom billet pedal covers made for the Wilwood assembly and custom gas pedal; brushed anti-slip with domed grip inserts. Remove your old rubber covers, drill two holes, and screw in. Looks like the offer '88 mustang pedals.

Thanks! I have taken care of the loose feel and I already ordered the same billet pedal overlays you just mentioned and in the same finish as well, and from the same source. I also got the Heel/Toe (wider) trhottle pedal upgrade.
Greast minds do think alike I guess!
