Ford 8.8" rebuild information.
Looking now at rebuilding my 8.8" IRS differential, and wanting assembly information, such as whether bearing cap bolt threads oiled or not for accurate torqing?
A mechanic friend who is helping me with this mentioned I should use Red Lead compound mixed with oil to give a proper mesh reading instead of bearing blue which just marks the wear spot, where Red lead marks the un-meshed area, this may be an old fashioned way, and I have been told this product is now banned!!

I always use a little never-seize/moly lube on the bolts/studs/nuts to give a good torque reading. Oil should give you an accurate reading too.
Also, usually the rebuild kits come with gear paint. It will show the whole tooth.

New gear sets come with a small tube of marking paint (yellow)or you can even paint the gears with white lithium grease. Just don't put either one on your tooth brush.
As far as the bearing caps, they are not a critical torque item, ARP assembly lube (moly grease) is widely accepted as mentioned some just use oil.

Ford 8.8
Hey guys,
I have just looked in the Yukon kit and it has some yellow grease in a red container/paint brush, also I assume a little tube of assembly lube for the threads!!! I think I will order some ARP Lube which will come in handy for other jobs.

Ford 8.8" rebuild information.
The kit has new crown-wheel bolts, I wonder if its worth fitting new carrier bearing cap bolts! My IRS is all alloy including the caps so I am a bit wary of torque settings etc as over torque may distort the cap.

Even the caps are aluminum? I don't think I knew that.
I would just reuse what you have and torque to spec.
If you're concerned about really putting some power down, you could always put in a set of ARP studs. I just installed a set on my 1990 Mustang when I switched gears.

8.8
I would like to get hold of the torque settings for the alloy IRS especially the main cap carrier bolts. I gather the other settings maybe the same as the cast 8.8, but alloy may grow more .............?

Blykins,
I have purchased some studs ARP 250-3004, I see the original bolts are 70-85ftIbs, from what I can gather 70ftIbs for an alloy pumpkin, and up to 85ftIbs for a cast IRS unit. I am actually wondering what you chaps torque these studs down to with the 1/2" UNF thread on the outer end?
If anyone can contribute information on whether the Aluminium 8.8 has different setup clearances etc than a Cast iron 8.8, I would appreciate it, as all the information I have found doesnt differentiate between the two materials options!

I used the same torque spec. Just put a little moly grease on the threads and torque them down.
I've never seen different setup specs between aluminum and cast rearends. You're basically setting pinion depth, backlash, and bearing preload, which should be the same. The gears don't know what the housing is made of.

8.8"
Thanks, I will get on with it. I am being a bit fussy as the ARP bolts have an approx torque setting of 95ftIb, in order to get enough stretch, and with the light looking alloy caps etc I am wary about distortion, and stuffing a housing thread!

Only Red-lead I ever heard of was a primer? White-lead is banned but there's a product called Insted-a-lead that works the same.
Never liked Prussian blue either, too hard to read.

Any good 8.8 rebuild guides out there on the web? I've found a couple that were to vague and looking for details.
