Default engine and trani question

Hello all, I have not done a formal introduction for myself, just jumping right into the quetions. So here it is...for 7 years I have wanted a Cobra and now is the time. I have always been a Corvette guy, i have owned 8 vettes but I think it's finally time to go FASTER!!! I decided I am going to jump on the band wagon and do the FFR kit hopefully by the start of Dec. The only question I have been able to think of... if I do a Mustang donor deal and use the factory 5 speed from an 87-98 will it bolt up to a BB with the correct BB bell housing? Im not real familiar with ford transmissions. I have a 351 and a 460 ready to go. I'd like to use the 460. Also are the 5 speeds from the 80's the same as used in the 90's? I realize its not the best trani for BB power but for now...

thank you
dan

Default Will not handle the power or abuse unless,

Im2fast4U Dan If you drive with an egg under the gas pedal it will last for a short time. You have not said nothing about power output or which motor you are going with. You have not said what you are going to do with the car. Big differents between the 2 motors you are talking about. Are you going racing? Autocross, roadcourse, 1/4 mile?? What gearing for th rearend are you looking at? The superstreet Richmond would be my first choice or a G-Force T-56 with single or double overdrive. They should last you through 2 -3 motors and clutches. The richmond is a 5spd with 2.87 first and .87 OD It's good for real 600 HP and torque. Price about $3,200.00. There are trannys out there for $700-1,000.00 less but you get what you pay for. Fill in the blanks and we will give the best info we have todate. Rick L.

Rick, is there a difference between the Richmond road race trans and the super street 5 speed other than the later comes with the shifter?

Default I am not 100% sure about what you are asking

Snakebit From the info I have gotten, the superstreet trans is a heavyduty trans for high HP motors on the street with about a 600 HP and torque rating. I am looking at one for myself to replace the 6 spd richmond that I have run in the car. This is a street trans with 450 HP and torque rating. It works fine but have no interest in breaking it. It will go in my 79TA car. I have been told that the 2, 5 spd trannys except for the case don't have alot in common on the insides. I am talking about the superstreet and the older 5 spd with the 1-1 5th gear. I am using a G-force clutchless trans now with a 1-1 5th gear. It shifts like butter. The faster you shift the better. Cost was $6K. It's good for 900ft of torque and 1K HP. I have not broken it in 8 years of hard racing. I didd send it back for a checkup and it was perfect. I am going to send it back for a 1st and second gear change in the spring. I am dropping the 3.15 first gear and going to a 2.87. 5th is still 1-1. My trans has no synro's except for reverse. It's dogs and ramped collars. It's a little noisy with the straight cut gears. This is the strongest gears for a trans. Some trannys have 22 degree gears and some have 30 to stop any noise. IMO the high the degree to the gears, the less strength they have and holdup under hard abuse. David Kee's would be the one to ask. He's a pro and sell trannys. I am from the school of hard knocks and being simple. Rick L. Ps do you bring your cobra to E-town for the swap meets??
