oil pressure 396 stroker spf #1050

what should my oil pressure be. On the dyno it was 60-70 in the car it is 40-50.I was told the superformance oil cooler is very small and that is the reason for the drop in pressure. **) **) **)

There has been some discussion on this subject before. I racall another member having mentioned that some of the SP cars do not have the oil cooler actually hooked up because of oil flow restriction.

I have no personal experience with this probablem but using the search feature might uncover the original thread.

Good Luck

SPF 952 392 "Crate Stroker"

475 miles (not EVEN broke in yet), oil pressure on guage reads 60-65 at start-up. With oil at 70-80 degrees C., pressure is 55-62.

OIL PRESSURE

We finally found out why I haven't had good oil pressure in my 392 stroker crate motor. We took off the two lines at the oil cooler and put in a by-pass. I instantly had 60 psi @ hot idle. I reinstalled the hoses and it dropped down to 40 and it doesn't matter if I rev to 5000, it doesn't go above 40. Definitely a problem with restriction. I put in a Melling HV oil pump as suggested but to no avail. Will it hurt the engine if I race it with the low oil pressure ??? Besides a by-pass does anyone know of another cure for this problem ??? Like a perfect replacement oil cooler ???

I think that the oil cooler is to small for the car.My engine on the dyno was 60-70 put in car and 40-50 it has to be the restriction on the cooler.

I will be replacing the 20-50 with 10-40 Quaker State and see if that makes a difference. If not, The cooler will have to be modified. I'll keep you posted on what fixes I try. I can't understand why the 351 & 460 don't have the same problem. John

Hi there - thought my experiences might help.

I am running a stroker (408) Windsor in my (UK) Crendon. When I installed the oil cooler, I looked up several previous threads about what dia lines to run, and size of fittings to use, since I have fairly long piping runs and wanted to avoid a pressure drop problem. I used all dash 12 aeroquip fittings (NOT the forged ones which have pressure drop issues) and hose, with a Mocal 235 mm wide 13 row cooler.
One area I had to attend to was the oil take-off sandwich plate, where I opened up the oil passages with a die grinder. Without this the internal passges would have severely restricted oil flow, no matter what size piping I used.

Result is 50 psi at tickover, 60 - 65 psi from 3000rpm up, hot. I am using valvoline racing oil, 20W-50W, non synthetic, which is a vast improvement on the oils I tried previously.

hope this helps

Wilf

I will bwe changing the oil to 10-40 this weekend. If I still have low pressure I will be modifying the oil cooler. I will keep CC posted. John

What RPM's are you running to get the 40-50psi? I have always
heard that a good rule of thumb is 10psi/1000 RPM for anything over 3000 RPM.

By the way Competition Motorsports built the engine for my SPF #908 and did not hook up the oil cooler. Just uses the Canton pan and no problem with either pressure or temperature:)

Marmmansa,
40 -50 psi at idle is plenty of oil pressure. I have had small block fords idle at 25 psi with no problems....and I drove the hell out of them.

I am running the hell out of my too and it seems to be fine.2nd and 3rd are my favorite gears to rip through when I give my buddies rides. Most of them are BB chevy guys and when I take them for a ride they can not believe how fast these cobras cars are.:D
