The distributor has nothing to do with the advance of the timing on your system. The pickup in the distributor sends a pulse-train to the Thick Film Ignition Module (TFIM). The TFIM sends that pulse train to the ECU. The ECU decides where the timing should be and sends a pulse-train back to the TFIM. The TFIM then switches the coil based on the pulse-train from the ECU.

If the PIP is unplugged, the TFIM reverts to the pulse-train coming from the pickup in the distributor, which is the base timing with no changes from the ECU.

Either the ECU is not sending a pulse-train out to the PIP, the wiring between ECU and TFIM is bad, or the TFIM is bad.

thanks for the information on that... I was debating on first changing the TFIM... I will order one in the am and give it a run.....

Sorry I haven't gotten back. I would guess a wire issue. $40 for the TFIM isn't too bad and it sure is a spare part that could save you a tow. Keep the old one in the trunk with a tool to swap it out.

Sorry it took so long to get back to this, but olddog was exactly right. I switch out the TFI, hooked the SPOUT connector back up and reset the timing tables in the SCT chip. Then ran it on the dyno and it was back to 490 whp. Thanks for the help...Mac
