1) No problem if bypass opens, IF IF IF IF, it is a CLEAN SIDE BYPASS!!!!! IF it is a dome side/dirty side, then it flushes the dirty side of the filter media into your engine!!!!!!! What could be worse. Next time you pick up an oil filter look straight down if you see a button it is dirty side. If you see a spring just below the threads where it mounts it is a clean side.
2) Bypass would usually open when engine is cold and you are pumping 500 cst oil and your oil pump rv is lifting. 10W30 at 100c is only 12 Cst!!!! Understand 10w oil is thicker at 70F then 30W oil is at 212F!!!! Even though you are led to beleive 10W30 is only 10W when cold is fine, 10W at 50F is like syrup. 30W at 212 F is like rubbing alchol.
3)If you have a high volume oil pump theoretically we are pumping more oil so the pressure drop would be greater. If it exceeds the bypass setting it will bypass.
4) If your filter plugs off it will bypass. I saw one article that it would only take 14 grams to plug off a filter. This might happen in an older engine if you switched from dianasour to synthetic and the synthetic started cleaning it.

10 years ago I switched from dino 20W50 to synthetic 5W-30, my oil pressure went up. I figured the less viscous synthetic was better able to flow through the many feet of plumbing and hoses, the filter and the oil cooler than was the maple syrup dino oil.

Just got off the phone with Ford Racing. I had him read me the detail since he did not understand micron, LOL!!
OK the FL-1HP has been replaced with the M-6731FL-1A, so the ford racing hp filter has the added nomenclature of M-6731 and onlly available through Ford Racing not motorcraft.
The FL-1hp or m-6731FL-1a are both the same and have a multipass rating of 99% for 20 micron!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now that being said usually ratings are single pass, what they are saying is after multiple passes you will filter anything over 20 micron 99%of the time. It also has a synthetic media which is an upgrade over the fl-1a.
Bottom line is the FL-1Hp is 20 micron, more pleates and is a better filter, is it $12.00 better I have no clue. The bypass rating is 17-23 psig. Old HP was 22 psig which falls in the range.
My oil pan was so clean when I removed it had to be filtering.

Sorry guys the FL-1Hp and CM-6731FL-1A are not the same. The FL-1HP has been discontinued and was supplied by Motorcraft. The new replacement is CM-6731FL-1A and is supplied by Ford Racing. The old FL-1HP is a paper element the new 6731 is synthetic. Alot of old stock FL-1HP out there. I can only assume their micron is the same.
Either buy the FL-1A or the new CM-6731FL-1A, both available through summit or jegs. I plan on pulling my FL-1HP and installing the 6731 since I know the micron rating of 20 and bypass pressure and it has the synthetic media. I will post dp results.

They're not available individually yet, unless ordered direct from Ford Racing. Summit sells them by the case at $188.

So is the FL-1HP now only for the 385 series, which is what Summit implies?

I also note that it seems Summit only sells the CM-6731FL-1A by the case. EDIT: Rodknock beat me to this point, but he said he'd buy a case and send me just a few.

Local ford dealer has them for $13.29 but I am lucky he is only 1 of 4 Ford dealer in the country and one is mine. LOL!!
I hate to say but RoushYates on line carries them, maybe the new roush filter is the new 6731

The bottom line for me is:
a) How much HP will this add? and
b) How much lighter will this make my car?

You aint kidding I should drink!!! Wow, Royal Purple sent some serious data, I guess they arent smoke and mirrors, RP accept my apologies. I not going to post the charts since they say confidential.
The pressure drop across the Royal Purple 30-8A, the substitute for the FL-1A is less than 2 psid up to 9 gpm!!!!!!!! Even the name brand RP compared to is only 3.2 psid at 9gpm. Viscosity was 20Cst. 10W30 at 100C has a viscosity of 10.9 cst. A melling rep told me their high volume oil pump is good to 8 gpm, so we are not even close to 9gpm. Even at 20 gpm it differential pressure is 4 psid!!!!!!!!! The RP filter efficiency was 98.5% efficient @ 20μ, the graph supplied was impressive.
The Royal Purple filter is as good as it gets. I did not get their bypass setting but it appears to be cleanside bypass. Even if it is set at 9 psig, the filter is well below that at 2 psid. They are working on the answer and will respond.
RP are available at Pep Boys. They run about $14.99.
The proof will be in the pudding, I will also test the Royal Purple with my set up.

This is a great thread. I just put 9qts of Royal Purple oil in my motor with a K&N 3001 Filter. The oil Change has 0 miles on it, and I might have to replace the filter based on this info

Ok Max, i tried to explain this to you in another thread ( oil pressure drops the longer your oil circuit is due to the resistance in the system (relief valve opens)),but you would not listen.
I have tested several filters before in regards to differential pressure across the filter and there is VERY little difference between filters (street engines). NO ONE should use a high micron RACE filter on a street engine.
Mobile 1 & K&N are the same filter from Champion labs (both good filters)
Bypass= U guys will never have a issue with this. U change your oil and filter often so the filter is not that dirty. If it were to bypass (very cold) most of the trash is already held in the filter element.
Some Car manufactures allow up to 15000 miles between oil changes. Most of you change your oil as often as you clean your car

Thank you, I approached this issue earlier in the thread. It seems to me that the bypass function is probably a "fail-safe" to ensure oil flow to the engine in the case that the filter becomes clogged up to the degree that it would not allow adequate oil flow. I change mine probably twice a year, and I doubt that I ever get more than 1,000, maybe 1,500 miles on the oil/filter. I was a bit worried about excess oil pressure, but it doesn't seem that issue is a big one, either.
The issue of "micron" capture seems more important to me....and I have to wonder if there is a greater pressure drop across one of the two filters of the same manufacturer (perhaps MotorCraft) with filter media of different "micron" ratings. (hint, hint, Madmaxx!!)

I agree at operating temp I doubt we will ever open the bypass valve (especially on the Royal Purple) on any filter. I question on cold start-up however when viscosity is 100's of Cst. This weekend we have a little cool front comming through. I plan on testing the RP, the FL-1A and FL-1HP.
I am 99% convinced the best filter on the market is the Royal Purple. I cut one up last night, it even has a wire mesh on the dirty side of the synthetic filter media to maintain pleat spacing on the filter element. It is built like a dump truck. I cant wait to see if I can register a pressure drop across it. 99% efficiency at 25 microns, and little to no differential pressure according to their data.
Just got confirmation from RP that bypass is set 9-11 psig and clean side by-pass which I verified last night.
