Default 3.7L Ti-VCT V6 (the 2011 mustang v6)

I've been researching building a Cobra for the past 8 months. One thing I haven't really seen, and maybe I've missed it... is a discussion about obtaining and using the new V6 power plant from the 2011 mustangs.

Producing 300HP and 31mpg in a full size mustang, I can only imagine what this engine would do in a Cobra. It out powers the original 289. At the same time, its actually a...... green car (don't tell anybody).... It might even get better mileage than that Smythe performance rig.

So has anyone thought this through yet? If you have and my search skills missed it, my apologies.

Interesting point. I have read several articles on this engine, and it is amazing what Ford has been able to with it. I believe putting one in a cobra would be very difficult. It would be significant project to overcome all the computer issues at this point. You can't believe how the ECU is so integrated with so many areas of the car. Now, I believe that Ford does have a kit for the new 5.0 to be installed in Hot Rods. Now you are talking!

Chevy has their new all aluminum 3.6 liter direct injection V6 that produces 312 horsepower in the 2011 Camaro. 4 valves per cylinder, variable valve timing and 11.3 - 1 compression. It has steel rods and crank.

Paint it Ford blue and tell em it is the new Ford V6

That is a good engine borrowed from the Cadillac. Direct injection is the way of the future. But you still have the computer issues to overcome without a kit that is designed for Hot Rods. I am very impressed with what the Aussie guys are doing with putting non-traditional engines in Cobras. It may have a lot to do with availabilty of Ford engines. Not sure. They seem to be very innovative.

I have that engine in my wifes Caddy CTS. It is a great engine! In the Caddy it is rated at 304 hp ON REGULAR GAS !!!!!!! The Camaro is the exact same engine but with less restrictive intake and exhast and is rated at 312 hp ON REGULAR GAS!!! I have the direct replacement K&N filter in her car so I should be a little above the factory 304 hp. Also, if you run these cars on high test, the ECM allows to timing to advance so you pick up about another 10 hp.

It is amazing that for such a tiny engine, it also produces very strong low end/off idle torque. Feels like a MUCH bigger engine. I attibute that to the variable valve timing and the 11.3:1 compression.

Variable valve timing is one of the most under rated advances in automotive engineering. I relate it to when you had to advance the spark by hand vs. when they first made vacuum and centrifical advance. Now, no need to advance or retard the cam gears for your application. You now have your cake and eat it to.

"Would be awesome, but too much of a headache due to ECU integration currently".

That about it?

For the same money you can put the 5.0 in there and the mpg won't be that far off... 2400 lbs car. Just step up the gears.

Never say never....I have just put the Ford 5.4 quad cam in my Aussie Cobra. I should think it would be similar to installing the V6. I had to use the loom from our Falcon, body control module and ecu. The sparky was able to disable a few items not needed. I know many in the States seem to be against the later engines but it really is a great engine in the cobra.
