Default Intake Manifold Gasket

I have a 331 stroker with Brodix ST 5.0 R heads and an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake manifold. There is a very small leak in the intake manifold gasket around the #2 cylinder and I'd like to replace the gaskets.

I've read some not so flattering remarks about the Fel-Pro gaskets recently and I'm looking for replacement recommendations.

Thanks,

Ken

Ken, use the Victor Reinz gaskets or get the Fel Pro with the steel shim in the gasket.

I went with the steel-core gasket from Fel-Pro on my 392 (351W). So far, so good.

I use the plain Fel-Pro gaskets, and have never had a failure. Ever.

use some Hylomar with the gasket of your choice & it is doubtful you will have any leaks. It is non-hardening. You can get the Hylomar racing formula anywhere that sells Permatex.

Plus one for Hylomar Blue, Racing Formula. You could use a newspaper gasket with the stuff and be fine. SCE would be my choice. Just did the same thing.

I don't think I would want to use a steel shim gasket on an aluminum head and intake. It will "dent" the aluminum and the next replacement will be more difficult.

you might have a point there if the bolts were torqued to head gasket levels. Depending on the manufactures instructions intake bolts are usually tightened to only 17 - 25 ft. lbs. Would that be enough to dent the aluminum?

Interesting conversation with the AFR head guy when I was getting an intake gasket recommendation. He says to not use a torque wrench on the intake bolts (we went through all of AFRs reasoning).

They just want you to "snug" then up good and firm and then consider them a maintenance item and recheck when you nut and bolt, without retightening those still snug.

But, in the end, I always torque them anyway. At 15 lbs into those aluminum heads, it starts to feel like plenty and more seems like asking for trouble.

Since I'm a lazy SOB, I thought I'd check the torque on the intake bolts before replacing the gaskets. Torqued them to 18 ft. lbs, in three stages; 10, 15 and finally 18, it was definitely needed.

I'll fire it up tomorrow morning and check for leaks again.

I have AFR heads. Torked the intake bolts to 18 lbs with a little oil on the threads.
