What firing order to use
Running a 351 Windor motor and I installed a 302 cam .Now my question is do I use the firing order for a 302 or 351 cu engine.
The car runs very well, just wondering which would be better.

It's the same.....
13726548
The OLD small blocks used an older firing order.
But if it's running good now, believe me, it won't run good if you switch.

Like Brent said you must have it right because if you did not it would not even run. I think it was around 1980 that the 302 went to the same firing order as the 351W which is Brent said 13726548 and the early 302 was the same as the FE and 460 which is 15426378.
Good luck, Keith

Guys, just curious here.....is the different firing order due to differently arranged crank throws or due to the difference between cams? I can't make any sense of just the numbers. I'd guess the cam, but that would just be a guess.
Thanks!
Cheers from Dugly

Its the cam. Change the cam and you can swap orders.
The change was originally done to reduce loads on the 302s front main bearing which had gone up as a result of the move to a sepentine belt system.

Firing is dictated by the camshaft, the firing order should be listed on the "Cam Card". --
however a 351W camshaft, installed 180 off will run with a 289 firing order, - just not well. -- had a customer drive in after he installed his camshaft, and read the firing order on his intake and used that. ( cam was indexed 180 off )

Gotta wonder if there is a difference in the torque curve or peak horsepower assuming everything else is equal. The intake resonance and exhaust pulses in the headers would be different. There should be some small difference in power.

Some of the firing order swaps are done to decrease a certain amount of loading on the crankshaft at one time.
There are lots of firing order swaps available. For instance, you can order Chevrolet cams with a 4/7 swap. You'll hear different opinions/stories on it. Some say it gains a few horsepower on the right combinations...others say it doesn't make a hill of beans difference.

We have dozens of dirt track racers running our engines with the 7/4 swap and it definitely helps especially on the restricted carb guys--makes a terrific differance when a left turn only car has its wheels turned a little (or a lot) to the right!!!(corner exit)

Someone should develop a crank and cam so that all the cylinders on the right fire at once and then all the cylinders on the left. Kinda like a giant virtual V Twin Harley engine. Now that would sound "different". My gut feeling is that it would develop massive torque, but not rev.
