Default 402w stroker

getting ready to dyno my new motor. 351w stroked to 402 cu in. motorsports sportsman block A 351. bought in the 90's for $800 bucks. all internals are forged steel. probe pistons. 58cc i believe. 10.5.1 comp ratio. HR cam cam custom grind. 242 248 600 621 110. AFR 205 heads. vic jr with a 750 HP DP. 1\3\4 headers. hope for 500+ HP?. any ideas before i dyno it?. thanks.

Sounds like you will hit your target easily. However, with that cam and the Vic. Jr. intake it probably won't have great street manners.
I'll look forward to hearing/seeing the dyno results to see what the low end looks like and what the sweet spot is that it really starts to breathe. Should be around 2500-3000RPM or so....

This should be about a 540 to 550HP engine if all machine work correct and assembled right and the camshaft degreed right. Should be in the 530 to 540 ft/lbs of torque range again depending where the camshaft is degreed. You should end up someone where around 35 degrees on the timing. You will also see some power with a Super Sucker spacer if you have hood clearance. Watch what header you use so that you do not cover the exhaust ports on your heads. Try to get headers that are at least 1 3/4 that use the wide bolt pattern, 1 7/8 would be better. good luck.

thanks keith. i do have that size headers from FPT. ill make sure they dont cover the ex ports or ill grind them down if not. hope for good #'s. thanks.

The main point is just make sure the engine is mechanically sound and have fun. Dynos will vary, sometimes 5-10%....some are stingy, some are happy.

The parts in your engine are very good parts and will yield excellent performance, no matter what the dyno says.

Keep in mind that you can't drive the dyno, so there will be another tuning session once the engine is in the car. If it's got an MSD distributor in it, take note of what timing settings works best for the engine and make sure to recheck it once it's in the car. It's common for MSD boxes to vary from box to box.

That engine will be some good fun in a lightweight car like a Cobra....you'll have a blast with it.

thanks Brent. its going in my 69 mach1. had it for yrs. 3.89 with tru trac and a full manual c-4 with a 10'' converter! street car. should wake up the neighbers!!

My bet is you float the valves about 5700 rpm unless you have some pretty stout valve springs with those durations and lift.

Make sure you give it enough stall on the converter. The engine should be a good match for the rearend gears.

Default 392 with AFR heads got 537hp

Good luck with the engine, here is a good comparison for you to start from. This article is from Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords and details an otherwise stock 351 Windsor stroker also with AFR 205 heads that got 537hp. It is "only" stroked to 392 and was only 9.5:1 compression. You are going to be running a few more cubes and higher compression, so I'd say to expect at least these numbers. Hope that helps give you a baseline. If not, keep tuning it until you do or something went wrong. Frankly, I'd expect whatever Keith and Brent said to expect - you have two of the best engine builders in the country chiming in.

thanks jim. thats why i come here to post my combo. this site is real and has great members. Brent, i have a JPT converter which stalls around 3000 i quess but with this new motor im sure it will flash higher. my old motor same block i have now had the roush 200 heads and smaller cam and flashed over 4500! going to be torque moster which i want for the street. dont care for anything over 5000 rpms anyway. i think i installed matching springs with the cam!!

With those heads and that intake, it will probably peak at around 6000-6200. For that kind of rpm with a SBF hydraulic roller, I like to run around 150 lbs seat and 400 lbs open pressure. Titanium retainers and/or lightened lifters will help out too.

It will be a little lighter on the torque, but the midrange and upper end horsepower will be very fun.

thanks Brent. i didnt want a huge cam for a street car but you get differant people saying go big on the cam with a stroker so i had it in the 240 range. vic jr worked real good on my last combo. these heads should wake this puppy up a bit. mid range will be killer with this new engine combo plus those tall gears and converter.

Well said, not that I have anywhere the knowlegde of blykins on engines. With stock lifters and standard valve train components, 150 /400 would be minium but once again I have limited knowledge only my own experience, I would think 170 /450, but hey every engine is different. I do like the idea of keeping it below 5500 rpm, just use a rev limiter. With heavier spring pressures I would use the redline break-in additive, you have some serious forces on your rocker arms, pushrods etc. Set your lash about 1/4 turn that way if they float no damage.

I am sure I will get flamed but some of the best lifters on the market are standard ford racing. About $140 for set of 8.

I would agree with that for SBF's....unless you're going old school without a spider and need link bars.

As for spring pressures, if you're just going to 5500, 170 lbs of seat is not necessary. Sure you can run 170/450, but for something that peaks at 5500 rpm, there's no use in adding more wear factor.

For most SBF's, even with the heavier valvetrain, 150-155 lbs of seat will get you 6 grand and then some.

One thing that will help you on spring pressure is that the AFR head has a 8MM valve stem valve and they are lighter than a 11/32 valve. Your engine should be fine with 140-150 seat and 375-380@.600 in most cases. What the duration does not tell is how radical the lobe is. There can be 10 lobes with the same duration at .050. I have had 242 lobes that would turn 7000 rpms with these spring pressure and lobes with the same duration float at 5600 rpms. This where knowing your engine, valve train weight and who you are dealing with on the camshaft comes in handy.
Comp Cams somehow ground some LS1 lobes on one of my FE camshafts and the engine would not turn over 5000 before valve float. Could not figure this out because the numbers on the camshaft were stamped right but ground wrong. I knew what was going on and everything else was the same as in the past so sent the camshaft in to have them check it in the cam doctor and sure enough wrong lobes. A bunch of hasle for sure.

almost 565HP with 530 ft lbs of torque!! 1"" spacer with a 950HP. very happy..
