Seems as though the problem has worked itself out. I road tested the car to check my theory about clearing up after 3000 RPM. The car popped a few times while I headed to the expressway but definitely ran smoother than the other night. Took it up to 5500 RPM in 3rd then up to 4800 RPM in 4th before I settled into a 3500 RPM cruise. Got off the next exit and took city streets back to the house, keeping the Rs below 3000 and it ran as smooth as could be; no popping or backfires (not even when I came off the expressway with my foot off the pedal). I guess there must have been some crud that cleared itself out. Hope this cured my problem.
