Default "Ultimate" SBF road race engine? Hasselgren SBF TransAm

Found this while sniffing around the net for road racing small block engines & parts. Searched CC for Hasslegren, but no matches.

Out of reach for the most of us, but with the right tools and patience, it would be possible to build a "budget copy". Yes, a beautiful construction, this is.

Hello, small block tuners & drivers.

I've been thinking and wondering how a great ("ultimate") SBF, preferably 302 based, engine should been put together using mostly off- the shelf parts. I'm not looking into details yet and the two things I consider most are heads and camshaft. Let's assume the engine will operate between 4000 and 8000 rpm and have a IR setup.

Most camshaft grinders have street/ strip and drag cams available. Who has OTS RR cams in their catalogues? Maybe a taylored pice of equipment is needed? And even more; what atributes should a RR cam have in lobe ramps, angles, duration and lift? I would assume that a good RR cam should somewhat wider band than a drag cam, for one.

And so the heads. This Hasselgren engine in the above post use high port Yates heads. Will an quite exotic head like this be needed to get the most out of the package? Like a set of Edelbrock Victors, that will need a custom inlet manifold? Or maybe a set of TF TW race heads give a almost identical result?

Just some thoughts.

I like it a lot. In fact it would look real nice in one of my cars

While reading that article I couldnt help thinking how similar that concept is to the Australian V8 Supercars engine package, slightly higher RPM limit & compression ratio in that T.A. build.

The Aus supercars are not bad at all. I once spotted a carbon inlet manifold they used on the Ford engine. As far as I can remember, it was IR, lower & upper, all links & other parts hidden between the rows of butterflies. A really nice piece of equipment. I think the inlet was 9.000$.

Jac, that's the same thing that went through my head as I read that piece. I'd like something like that in my Boss302.
