How much oil can a SBF 427 hold?
Roundabout question... If you started pouring oil in a 427 small block with th heads off and a Canton 9 quart pan and filter ... How many quarts can go in there before the oil is coming out the heads?

How could oil come out of the heads if you've removed them?  |

Actually an small block Ford engine will hold about one quart of oil..........now how much the pan holds is another question.............

Part 2, asking what additional volume by heads... So if 16 quarts are leaking out with heads on, is 15 quarts leaking with heads off? I use these numbers as example only. |

Here's another way to ask it... Could you possibly overfill a small block ford by 7 quarts?

I don't know about that. I feel sure you could pour an additional seven quarts in and it would hold it though. |

BTW... that was a typo, it should have been valve covers off. Sorry, on the iPad. |

I think it would hold that much and might still run at idle. Lubrication of the piston skirts, wrist pins, and your solid roller tappets would be excellent! Lots of splash!
:-)
At higher rpm I think things would get ugly.

Yeah, first with no valve covers. Then take the heads off (not sure how much oil would sit in the heads anyway...
The real question I suppose is how much oil does a pan hold when filled to the gasket? |

If you take 427 cubic inches, you will need a little over seven quarts to fill that volume. If you roughly say the area below the piston is clearly greater than the area above the piston, then you'll easily have the room for the seven quarts without ever getting up to the heads at all even with half the pistons being down at any one time. Driven gently, you might not ever even know you've over-filled it that much... maybe.  |
