Default Need help-Distributor gear prob

Take a look: Heres the deal-Removed original MSD dist-replaced with the MSD Vic Jr model (slightly taller to clear intake). Car ran great for 100 miles then POP! Eng stalled out and this is what I find. I have a sick feeling in my gut. Gear on cam looks fine from looking down on it-little shavings in there from dist gear.

Any help? ThxName: IMG00213-20120312-1851.jpg

Roller cam-It appears that the gear on the dist I used was cast which is not compatible with the cam I have. I need bronze or steel since it is billet cam, I hope I didnt damage cam gear.

You should be able to tell by looking....any shiny or sharp spots on the cam gear?

Have a 302 motor with e303 cam. I had a bronze gear on the small billet MSD dist that did the same thing. Went with steel gear. So far things are ok.

Cam gear appears fine from visual-now that i am looking closely at the dist gears they are def different material, the one i took out is steel and smooth where the one that came on the replacement is rough like cast would be. The flourescent green tag says "ONLY " for use with flat tappet....billet cams require a steel or bronze gear". My A.D.D. has struck again-I guess a few oil changes are in order.

Foer Racing says to use Bronze but based on what J Stern says I am wondering to use bronze or steel?

Steel cams can use steel gears, bronze gears, or polymer gears. The bronze gears wear fairly quick. The steel gear would be my choice.

Why did you have to change the distributor?

Jay-the distributor was hitting the intake, MSD makes one specifically for the Vic Jr intake which is a bit taller but exactly the same otherwise. It was not installed on my engine so I changed it. No good deed goes unpunished BTW I think my "bang is the trailing arm hitting the frame/body....if u look at it on the drive on lift, the front of the trailing arm is touching where the 2 bolts are. Do you think I can grind a little bit there?

Magnet.
Borescope.
Lottery ticket.

Get as many shavings out as you can throught the distributor hole and oil pan drain plug opening.

Borrow a borescope if you can to carefully inspect the cam gear or small dental mirror and flashlight - my eyes ain't good enough to see well looking down that opening....

Lottery ticket is self explanatory

Steel cams are pretty tough - you have a good chance...
