Solid Roller requires more valve spring pressure than solid flat tappet, generally if and when something fails it will be more catastrophic than those of a solid flat tappet. With rare exception once the initial break in period is completed solid flat tappet is trouble free. I have always felt that with current technology (heads, exhaust) if I was able to get my 289 to perform close to that of the engines used by the race teams from the 60's (380 HP) then THAT would be more than sufficient. I'm very happy with the solid flat tappet cam and 48 IDA's. Much more power than can be realistically used in street application.

I've seen a number of late model 5.0L blocks split down the middle in high rpm applications.
You said you don't want to do any block mods. At the very least I'd consider a main cap girdle.
I know a guy who is selling a complete Dart block stroker here in Brisbane for the right price if you're interested. If so, PM me.

I agree, Rick. I want an engine that looks looks period correct, sounds period correct, has character and won't try to bite me every time I drive the car.
Cheers,
Glen

Thanks Craig, but I'm not after a stroker. It will be a 302 with cleanup bore and standard stroke.
Cheers,
Glen

I've heard the horror stories of the FE solid roller lifters coming apart, but to be honest, a good set of solid roller lifters for a small block should last a long, long time with proper oil/oiling and adjustment........
on my race car they are going on 7 years now, adjust the valves once a year, rpm range on the track is normally 3000 to 7000, I use Mobil 1 synthetic oil.........
My spring pressure on the seat is 225 pounds, running a .630ish lift camshaft.....
So far no problems of any kind......
