Default Monterey Historics Exhaust Note

Did anyone in attendance at the Monterey Reunion notice the different exhaust note on the Red 289 #81 that finished 2nd? It had a totally different high pitched note. After checking things out it turns out the exhaust used a high tech Tri Y set up. 2 pairs (per bank)which were previously joined into merge collectors, joined into merge collectors again then a very short megaphone (for scavanging) then dumped under the car. The sidepipes were non functional.

Some of the vintage Mustangs have a different/exotic exhaust note as well.
Sounds glorious. They are revving them to 7500 all the time too.

Rick,
Gary at Vintage Performance does something similar with a double crossover "X" configuration on his 289 slabside Cobra. When he revs the little dual carb 289 motor up it sounds like its running 16 little cylinders like an exotic mini italia v8 or something. The pipes exit the rear and tip slighly upward. It was too loud so he has 4 or six mufflers on it now as I recall. He's played with various exhaust configurations like this producing interesting and different sounds. His Silver slabby was sitting there next to Gordon's #52 USSRC Cobra and Gary's #49 BRE Datsun 240Z next to it in Cobra row at the reunion.

Curt Vogt at Cobra Automotive maintains the #81 Cobra (CSX 2349). You could probably ask him about the exhaust physics.
