Default Hi temp reading

I am having hi temp readings. Just driving at lower speeds around town I will get to 210 and even 215. It will slowly go down to 190 (180 thermastat). I shoot laser temp gun at different locations and will be normal temps. Right around where sending unit is the same temp as the guage. The oil temp is right along with the water temp. Could an air pocket cause this? There also seems to be some water dripping from overglow attached to radiator. Aluminum radiator. Thanks for any opinion.

I'd say you need a bigger radiator and set the fan to cycle on at 190, off at 180.

I laser shot the temps and they are normal at the water pump hoses both out and in radiator. Everywhere else is not hot but normal. Just where the temp sending unit is located on the intake manifold is the problem according to laser temp gun. I was not very clear on what is happening. Sorry for misdirection. thxs Gary

I'd say your temp sender is simply showing the highest peak temp of the engine, that's why it is fitted where it is, just prior to the thermostat.

What pulley set are you running?, What cooling fan?, How much coolant does the system hold?, How many tubes in the radiator?, How many fins per inch in the radiator core?

Sounds normal to me. What was the outside temp when this happened? Mine goes higher than that on a 90+ degree day in stop and go traffic. Won't hurt anything.

When it is hot and you shut it off, is there any gurgling? Is so you either have an air pocket or steam pockets. If there is no air pockets and steam forms, it will build enough pressure to push water/steam out the overflow.

If there are no air pockets and temp is going high at low speeds, you do not have enough air going through the radiator. Fan, shrouding, air bypassing around the radiator, etc.

I feel better now. I do have the underdrive v-belt setup. So the water pump is not working at its best when at low speed. Not a problem at speed. An 1100 cfm fan. I am going to change out the fan setup with the tauraus one in a couple of weeks. Will help I am sure. 215 220 when idling thru parking lots is Ok? Have 16 lb radiatior cap.

How hard do you rev the engine?

Do you really need an underdrive pulley setup?

Stock ratios on the pulleys would be a good thing ! - the water pump moving water at a good rate is a healthy thing. , also 1100 CFM Fan - is way to low for anything of 5.0L or above displacement

I don't rev the engine hard very often. The typical on ramp to 5500 and no power shifting. I put on V-groove pulleys and did not realize the underdrive situation. The odd point to me is that the temps anywhere else on the engine, hoses and radiator are 165 to 185. Going in and out of the radiator. Just seems odd to me that only one spot the water temp is this hot and that is at the temp probe in the intake. Thxs for any advice.

Most of your problem lies with your pulley set-up!!!!!!!!!!! For anything but all out racing your crank pulley should be at minimum the same diameter as your water pump pulley or 1 to 2 inches LARGER in diameter...........you want to overdrive your water pump by 15 to 25% for street driving.......

Ditch the underdrive pulleys and you'll see your problem disappear........
