after around 10 years of that question, i take the smart-arse approach.

i respond either with "A real what?" or " are your girlfriends hooters real"

the physical stature of the person asking usually dictates which one i use

A simple, "No, it's a replica" works for me. If there are additional questions I usually answer them in the same mannerism as they were asked.

My new answer, " I thought it was, but a Rocket Scientist said it's 3% incorrect. And something about carbon dating the frame?"

Not sure if you get it?

My response?

"Thank you but no, it's a fake!" It's cool that you think I might be that well off though!

How many times do we have to revisit this question?

I tell them exactly what it is - a 1965 Shelby Cobra that was built in 2011. If they express more interest I'll explain how all that works.

Exactly my feeling.

I tell everyone it's a Ferrari Testarossa or California depending on my mood.

I tell them it's "real", but it's not an "original". That's when most get a funny look on their face, thinking I'm making fun of them or being a smart a$$!

Dang, I think I caught crap for asking this like 10 years ago ( maybe last week - these old people memory problems ).

So, I asked back, "Real what?"

Or, the completely insane answer of, "Oh hi...yeah I like it also."

Then there is the "who me?"

I mean, you only live once - have a little fun with it.

Well, if this is a clever way to bring Evan out of hiding, except for Boss 302 threads, then I applaud it.

I usually say yeah it's an original car I found it in a barn it had been sitting there for the last 30 years and I personally have spent the last 5 years restoring it to perfection. It's worth about $1,000,000 so if you could get your greasy hands off it I would appreciate it!

I do get tired of that question, I just say its a FFR. People usually smile and say cool.

On another note, I was tracking this past weekend and there was a cobra with the plate REAL 1. Made me want to get a plate that says NOTREAL.

Have a good day.

When someone asks "Is it real?", my standard response (using the subjunctive mood for things that cannot be) is "If it were there would be six burly gentlemen about twice your size, with bad attitudes and garlic breath, keeping you about 30 feet away." (I generally don't mention the tank traps and sticky paper...)

And I try to reeducate the masses away from the term "kit car" because it seems to have such a negative connotation. (Always with the negative waves, Moriarty...) I tend to slide right past "replica" and prefer the Barrett-Jackson terminology "tribute car".

Default There should be more options

How about it's a very well developed component car that I painstakingly built with my own two hands taking the care and attention to detail that can never be found on any assembly line.

Just saying
