Default Need new engine suggestions

well just got the verdict that the cam in my 302 broke and shot itself down through two cylinders and broke two rods in my 302. I need to find a new motor and am looking for suggestions. What I had was a 1971 roller motor. I would like to keep the headers, intake and toploader, so keep it a bolt in swap. Would a 347 or 351 stroker work? suggestions on where to get the motor would be appreciated.

The 302 or 5.0 block is 8.2 inch deck height.
The 351W block is 9.48 inch deck height.

Although the heads and headers can interchange between these two blocks the exhaust ports will sit higher and further out on the 351W block. So you would either have to modify the headers or modify the body to allow them to come out about an inch higher.

So without changing anything (direct bolt in) you are stuck with the 5.0 block. 347 is the going largest stroker, however you can buy an aftermarket block with a 4.125" bore. With the 3.4 stroke (347) that would give you 364 cid. If you bore it 0.030 over you could get to 369 cid.

Personally I would not bore a new block for 5cid. 6-7 Hp just isn't worth it to me. You can gain the same power to weight ratio by dropping 30 lbs and save money on your McDonalds budget.

Thank you, so I guess I should start looking for perhaps a 347 stroker, given that I just had the flywheel and brand new Mcleod clutch that should fit.

Anything that will bolt to the 302 will bolt to the 347. You will need to know if the flywheel is 28,50 or neutral.

What heads are you running and how much power are you wanting to make?

The block is out of a 71 Torino so I pretty sure the flywheel is a 28 oz. I am thinking of buying a short block with the heads and pretty much start fresh. I am thinking if the cam split and was able to do so much damage to the block that the heads would be suspect as well. also I have been checking around and I think it would be best to buy something that is complete and matched. I would just move over my Oil pan as it is a 70's Shelby part and the other external motor pieces. Looked at summitt and am now searching local in the Chicago area to see what I can find/afford

Call Mike Forte. He'll help you build exactly what you want at a very reasonable price. It will cost a little bit more than a crate motor out of the Summit catalog, but you'll get better product, with better service after the sale.
