I know you originally stated you wanted a 302 based engine and $4,500.00 budget........I have not put it on paper, but I don't think you can swing it,that's why I suggested a 351-W and still do......
Complete used 351-W,$500.00 and you get to tear it down, thereby learning a lot right there, machine the block, new pistons/intake/carb/cam and if you have any money left over, maybe a nice set of aftermarket iron heads and you'll get your 400 hp real easy and will not break the budget and you still get to build your own engine which was one of the things you wanted from the beginning.....
Just month ago,I gave a cousin a 351-W short block and a set of Ford E4 heads,FOR FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!! He has always helped me out when I needed it and was looking for a 351-W to rebuild to put in his newly acquired 1966 Ford F-100 truck........mild cam and carb,he'll likely end up with a nice engine in the 325 hp/350 lb ft torque range...........
The block needed boring which we knew from day 1, and he did some nice port/polish work on the heads,2cd hand alum intake and used Holley 650 double pumper, didn't ask,but since he's doing the work himself,I'm gessing he'll have less than $3,000.00 in it when it's fired up.......
Just something to think about......
