Default 347 stroker build

I have decided that i don't want to buy a "turn key" or "crate" motor and instead want to build the engine myself.
Does anyone have some good suggestions on parts? Good price deals? Set up? etc...
I want to make at least 400hp and while the car is not going to be a "daily driver" it is going to spend the vast majority of it's time on the street.

A lot depends on your budget, of course. But I'd call Mike Forte and talk with him about it.

One question for you... How much engine building experience do you have?

My question is what is the best way, parts wise, to build a high bang for your buck 347 that will be used as described above.

I think for a first engine, a 347 wouldn't be the best choice. Lots of block clearancing that needs to be done, extra parts on the pistons, etc.

May want to look at a 331 or getting a complete 351w and just doing a rebuild on it while adding some good heads and a cam.

I started with a 302 in my Cobra and after a few years I wanted more horsepower.
I stroked it.
After changing heads and intake I made 402 rear wheel hp and 416 tq. I stopped buying parts.

Last year I built a 347 for my GT 40.

I had Twisted Wedge heads and a MSD distributor on the 306 motor that was in the car so I used them.
I bought a Eagle forged stroker kit with pistons for the TW heads (extra $100 for the pistons).

You don't need a forged kit for the street but I bought it anyway.

Pioneer balancer (zero balance)
Had the flywheel zero balanced.
You need the flywheel and balancer when you have the shop to balance the rotating assembly.
I had the rotating assembly zero balanced.
I took the original 302 block from my Cobra and had it machined. Hot tank cleaned and then we cleaned it three more times before we started the build.
My buddy Eddie helped.

I bought
TFS spring up grade
TF lifters ( I think, I would have to check my notes at the shop.)
Scorpion 1.6 rockers
Comp Cam XE282HR-12 it's for my fuel injection system.
Comp Cam push rods, after we knew what length I needed
Ford timing chain
Trick Flow gasket kit
Melling M-68 oil pump
Ford Racing Dowel kit M-6026-A302
Milodon aluminum Hi Volume water pump
and other parts.


You will need to pick a oil pan and pick up. Make sure to check the oil pump out or buy one that has been gone thru. Check screen to bottom of pan clearance.

I kept up with the hours Eddie help me. Total 32 hrs. He has the correct tools to build a motor correctly. Bore scope, electric ring grinder, digital torque wrench, etc. Several thousands of dollars worth of tools.
He checked every bearing for clearance.

I hope this motor will produce 480 flywheel hp.

I hope to have it running in the next couple of months.

You could certainly do that. Any reason why you want the 302? Planning for a 289 Cobra build?

Here's a 425hp 347. It made 425 hp and 444 lb-ft of torque. Hydraulic roller, relatively inexpensive RHS heads, Weiand intake, etc.



This one is also a 347, but it's on the other end of the spectrum....CHI Cleveland heads, etc. It made 517 hp and 463 lb-ft.

I think you need to define a budget. It is all relative. Will your budget allow aftermarket heads or will it limit you to stock cast iron.

How mechanical are you? Have you seen an engine built? Do you plan on staying at a Holiday in Express the night before you start?

I have a 1965 mustang that will run 13.10 to 13.20 at 103 to 104 mph depending on the weather. Car weighs 3200 pounds. Is a stick shift and 3.25 rear gears. Runs on piss water for gas . I drive 80 miles to the track and change to a set of 26x8 slicks. Car should be a little quicker because of tire spin on the launch and 1 to 2 shift. How much power does my motor make? If it was put in a much lighter cobra how fast would it be a the track? By the way it is a 302.

There are cars with 1000 dollar motors and there cars with 10000.00 + motors that make 400 HP.

My point is if they could make 400 HP 289's in the 60's.......... factory iron heads. Most 331 and 347 are weak suck for the money and parts that are available now days.

I have seen many engine builds and am fairly mechanical. I have done work on cars for years, just never built an engine.

I have seen many flights and have good spatial awareness with excellent hand / eye coordination. I have flown in airplanes for years, just never flown one. Sure, I'll be your pilot today - what could go wrong?
