Default weber 48 ida for daily driving?

anybody using a 48 ida weber battery for daily driving or only on track?

my webers are running suboptimal, but all the mechanics here in germany recommend to convert to a 650 or 715 holley carburator,
maybe the european fuel does not preserve that much energy?
my engine is a 331...

i really would like to drive my webers

It's hard to get them tuned correctly. But once you do they should be fine. The fuel seems bad everywhere.

Had them on my GT40 and drove on the street. No problems. Going with them again on my Roadster build

Can you post a pic of your linkage system, and calibration details of the carbs, venturis, and all jetting please?

It sounds like you have some calibration/synchronization issue that your local mechanics can't get around.

Yes, your 331 would go well with a well set up Holley, but won't have the throttle response of a good Weber setup.

The 48IDA Webers were made for racing but are fully capable of being tuned for everyday use. Other than being properly tuned a well thought out linkage is a must, especially on an opposed carb system.

You can certainly get the IDA's to perform well for street driving.
Like the others have said, good linkage is essential.

Other important factors are low fuel pressure and good fuel filters. Webers also like a bit more timing advance.

Like the others have said, once they are dialed in they should be trouble free.

my car is at the coach builder and i am in holidays right now, so unfortunately i cannot give you details of of the carbs, venturis, and all jetting, i will check it out as soon as possible

Linkage is good, should be a breeze to synch carbs.

Don't like the filter screens myself, they are sieves and restrictive for hp.

A quad of K&Ns would be on my list.

thanks gary, the screens are already wasted, ohne flew away on the first testdrive

the main issues are these:

i am nearly passing out due to the exhaust fumes and when i lift the throttle, i have immediately backfire alarm....

There's a lot of good advice here on our CC forum, but you might take a look on the GT40's forum, too...lots of those guys run Webers. There is a board for Induction and IIRC there was one member that put a lot of info regarding tuning the Webers on a disc, which he sells fairly reasonably...check the "stickies" on the induction forum or search for "tuning webers".

Good luck! We'd all love to be able to run Webers...there's just "that look" about them...and, of course, great performance when the system is all tuned correctly. I do know they are fairly sensitive to cam design and don't necessarily tolerate a cam with a lot of overlap. Perhaps that is the source of your fuel odor?

If you run the filters it will flood the car under acceleration. Air too restricted...
You can use larger screen mesh, I just go naked.... Full on Weber...

Was that your issue, stalling under acceleration?

Also, cannot see but you need to keep fuel psi at 3psi. Webers do not need the fuel that a carb uses.

under acceleration they run absolutely perfect, but no cruising possible

Hi Peter,

Sounds like they just need a little "going over".

Inspection first, fuel pressure within 2.5-3.5, airflow balanced at idle etc.

Ensure all jets are snug.

If the airflow balance is out, it may explain some rough running.

Sounds like we need to know all the details of the carbs for jetting.

Should not be that fumey.

Open stack carbs can be smelly since the fuel fumes aren't contained by an aircleaner.

Webers are pretty simple, but it does take some time to learn how to set them up and tune them. It's a worthy effort.

I recommend starting with Jim Inglese. He probably knows as much as anyone about Webers in Cobras.

If you don't have a synchromer, you really need one. that is the first step.

I have ran webers in the past on the street with no problems. Every one loves the looks. The most important item is camshaft selection. Everything else is out the window unless you have a proper camshaft for the engine and the webers. Research the forums on this subject. Just trying to assist.

Here is some info on tuning webers...I don't think it's the same as the CD, but I haven't found that yet.
