Default 347 Stroker..

I am thinking of building a 347 stroker motor over the winter.

What needs to be done to the bare 302 block at the machine shop.

Any experience with the various kits out there?

How much horsepower have you gotten out of these?

Check out the December issue of MUSTANGS & FORDS magazine. They have a good article on the 347 stroker motor. I didn't like the oil ring situation with the 347 piston so I went with the 331 cid. But as the article says, there are ways around this (h-beam rod$) My engine builder says it should put out 330 to 350 reliable horsepower. 10:1 alum BRODIX heads, B303 cam, 1.7 roller rockers, Performer RPM & EDELBROCK 650 carb.....MH

We also didn't like the oil ring problem with the 347 and decided to go with the 331. It is a sportsman block, scat 4340 forged crank, forged JE pistons, ported and polished aluminum World Products Heads, comp cams custom grind .560" lift 230 duration, comp cams roller rockers, 10.4:1 compression. It should come out around 420 hp and about the same in torque. We are gonna put it on the dyno after it is together so i can post real results here in a couple of weeks.

I'll let you know when we are done adding options. Actually the way our engine builder prices it, it isn't that much more for a stroker. You have to buy a crank anyway.

You could get a 331 stroker with a regular 302 block and a cast crank for around 5500 i believe

Blake I suggest you seriously consider the New Dart Iron Eagle Block. This is the strongest sb Ford block there is, even better than the SVO block. Will cost you around 2k
Check it out.

Blake, If you woud like to see how the pros build a 347 stoker, take some time and go visit Jim Kuntz in Arkadelphia, AR. That's his favor and most popular race engine he is building today. I know it's a long trip but you will get a great education by visiting with his shop. His number is 870-246-5295, he's a great guy and has built several engines for me. P.S. He ain't cheap, but you have to pay for the very best, and he builds the very best.

Blake, Houston Performance has a good reputation as far as strokers go. I think they have a website. I believe Scott (scr11) has a 392 from them. Also Lozano Brothers in San Antonio have done some killer motors!

Blake, My engine was built by RV Engines (Richard Vania) in Alexander N.Y. By the time I was done it cost me around $5000. But that included a steel flywheel, FMS clutch & pressure plate, FMS "Performer" intake, Brodix alun heads, and a Canton road race oil pan. All I supplied was the Edelbrock water pump, MSD distributor, the B303 cam & FMS roller rockers. The cost for the Scat steel crank and pistons was, I believe, the same for the 331 or 347. If it is a street engine go for the 331. For the ultimate performance the 347 is the way to go but, I don't think it will live as long on the street. Try to decide how you are going to use the car and then build your car/motor accordingly. HAVE FUN!....MH

Seems like the 331 is the flavor of choice. I also went with the 331 because of the oil ring issue. My engine is supercharged so I couldn't afford to go with the higher placed ring pack on the piston. The 331 also requires less clearancing of the bottom of the block and bores The late model block is a pretty lightweight piece and I wasn't comfortable with the 0.030" over bore with the 347 stroke placing higher side loads on the bores. As far as power output goes, as always it depends on the cam, heads and intake package. With a good set of heads, a single plane intake and a cam around 225 - 230 degrees @ 0.050" and 0.5" lift you should easily be able to make 400 HP and still have a decent idle and low end response. I have the Trick Flow stage 1 roller cam in mine and I wish that I gone with a more aggressive profile.

Probe sells a 347 kit using a slightly shorter rod (5.315) which allows the piston pin to remain below the oil ring. The eliminates the 'oil ring issue'. There may be others that offer similar solutions to the piston pin intruding into the oil ring area. 331 kits seems to be priced about the same. In the end, sixteen cubic inches probably won't make alot of difference.

I have a 351 stroked to 396. The builder installed 10.5-1 billet pistons, h-beam rods,scat crank,aggressive solid cam and edelbrock heads w/ aluminum intake and 750 holley. It doesn't run real well on pump gas, but with the right mix it rips. Estimates are around 500 hp but I have not run it on the dyno at this point. After numerous runs in the vintage class and 1.5 years on the street, there is no leakdown problem and compression is holding at 280 +/- 3%.
We picked up a probe built 347 stroker with a steel crank, h-beams,forged 8.0-1 pistons and victor heads for our pro-street. With the roots style blower at 12 lb. we figure approximately 500 h.p.. With 23 lb. boost figures jump to 610 hp. We are finishing up the c-6 and will keep you posted on time slips sometime in the future.
