Modern Ford V8s - how much HP?
I just saw an article on Hot Rod T.V. about the Ford 4.6L V8. They showed aftermarket stuff for it and discussed the pushrod vs. SOHC vs. DOHC. What they didn't say is what kind of horsepower you can get from it.
How much horsepower can you get out of a 4.6 or 5.4L V8? Is the weight advantage worth the loss of cubic inches?

What weight advantage? It is my understanding that the mod motors weigh as much or more than a 351.
Mods cost more.
Engines cost more.
I don't think there is any advantage. But it toots the horn for guys that want something a little different.

I saw that show and laughed a lot.
The mod motor is huge, wider than a 460.
There is no weight advantage with that motor, that is for sure. An iron aluminum headed small block is lighter, less complex, and will make more power.
People struggle hard to get 400 hp from a 4.6L 4 valve mod motor and spend a lot of cash. That isn't hard from a 302, well, not too hard.
Go over the The Corral and ask around there, they'll give you the straight skinny. Mods do respond well to blowers though, that is for sure.

from a 4.6 mod owner
My 2001 Mustang GT "Bullitt" has the stock GT 4.6l SOHC with unique factory add-ons for the Bullitt: duel throttle bodies, Ford Racing intake, larger exhaust, underdrive pulleys. I added Densecharger cold air intake.
275hp from the factory. I ran 13.95 @ 100mph (NOT 11.95  ) at Tulsa International in 100+ heat and street tires.

11.95 @ 100 mph? Your nubers don't add up. 100 mph is about a 13.6 et. 11.95 et. is about 114 mph.
If you really ran an 11.95, which you didn't, you need about 395 hp, which you don't have. Sorry, just the facts.

Provided you have the right amount of cash, you can easily get a streetable 400hp out of s 4.6L SOHC motor, and 500HP out of a 4.6L DOHC motor. Vortec makes a wonderful, almost fully complete supercharger kit for this purpose....Only things you really need to change after that is your injectors (while they say it does not need it, it does), and a better fuel delivery system (the kits come with a larger pump, but I believe that the stock lines should be upgraded at that time as well)..........

I saw the same show and they said something about getting a maximum of 1300 HP from a 4.6L DOHC. They also mentionned problems with the bottom end when you try to get those kind of numbers. They were showing a blower setup with a large throttle body, a custom made plenum, etc, etc.
I had a '97 Mustang Cobra 4.6L DOHC, absolutely stock. It went OK but not much bottom end torque. I assume that type of motor really likes to rev. It would be fun to try one that was really healthy and had no rev limiter.
