Default Converting a 302 to look like a 289

Okay so I've got a 302 with a 5 point serpentine belt and I want to convert it to a 289 style 3 point dual belt. Just what do I need in the way of parts i.e. a complete list.
I figure some belts, pulley and a different water pump but what exactly?
Any preferences for specific pumps or pulley's would be useful too.

Lastly does this reduce the reliability much?

Thanks in advance.

You will need the early type timing chain cover and the water pump to match. Plus new pulleys for the Crank, water pump and alt. and any other accessories you have. I don't have part numbers but the cover is available from Ford Motorsports and you can use aftermarker pumps.

Early 289's had an oil fill in the front cover.
I would use an early front cover, 1965 aluminum water pump, black engine, the HiPo chrome, COBRA, or early finned Edelbrock valve covers.

If you have a later model engine, you will have a 4 bolt front pulley... The 289's used a 3 bolt... (4 bolt is better!)

Default 289 Clone

If you go on Ebay and do a search for 289 Ford you will find front timing covers, and waterpumps quite often, and occasionally sets or single pulleys are available too. Or you might find something at the auto wreckers. The two belt pulleys were used for air conditioning, smog pumps, and power steering. Be sure the water pump matches the front cover.

Good luck

Rick

Default Keep this in mind...

All 289 and early 302s have 28 ounces imbalance while late 302 have 50 ounces.

The real sneaky approach is to use a special balancer that looks like a 289 ... NPD sells them. With that you would only need an early front cover to make the 289 illusion perfect.

Not exactly....
Two other dead giveaways other than previously mentioned that a SB is a 289 instead of a 302.... 1. The area directly behind the intake is distinctive to either a 289 or a 302. 2. Anybody else know????

@Art!

Ok!
You got me on that one, you are right, when looking at the frontmost manifold to head bolt .. On 289s the bolt is visible going into the head...

But that is a head difference, not the block.

The other ?? I either donīt know or have forgotten ...

Art let us know!

I've found timing covers and water pumps. The thing is which ones will fit an early 90's 302 but look like a 289.
