Default 302 Water Jacket

If my 302 was rebuilt and the wrong water jacket was used, what would be the "dead" give aways?

mine has the jacket, that has the lower WP outlet on the pass. side.

A lot of looks, but no one wants to take a shot at this!!!

When you say the wrong "water jacket" was used....... what do you mean? To me, the water jacket is the area inside the block that containes the coolant. You can't change the water jacket!

There are small block water pumps that have the water inlet on either the passenger side or the drivers side...... depends on model/year/application. Also comes in aluminum on some models too. Most if not all are interchangable. Just don't use a reverse rotation pump from later production engines if your motor uses a "V" belt.

A little more explaination is needed so we know exactly what you are referring to..... front cover maybe?

The piece between the WP and Engine, there were 2 differant types both interchangable, but they use 2 differant WP's - One has a WP that has the lower rad hose on the Passage side and the other has it on teh drivers side....

To my knowledge, there are two types of covers, but they both will accept either a right or left side inlet water pump.

The only big difference in the covers that I can remember had to do with the location of the oil dip stick. One model has the dip stick hole in the cover, and the other does not..... the dip stick enters the pan from the side of the block. I think later 5.0 engines used in cars and explorers had different covers too, but I thought the bolt pattern on the pumps were all the same.

Jim's correct - the timing chain cover will accept either rotation pump. I believe it was around 1983 that Ford started changing to serpentine belts, which changed the pump rotation and therefor the inlet location. BTW: FMC p/n M-6059-D351 is the cover

My cover just had a freeze plug in the dipstick hole. A few raps with a drift and out it came! I then re-used the plug for the hole in the block (rear on driver's side - between cyl's 3 & 4).

What is the problem that caused the question?
