Default It's short block time...DSS or CHP or???

OK, time to upgrade and I need a short block (possibly long, undecided) and think I'm narrowed down to DSS or Coast. Any pro's or con't between the two or does anyone have any other recommendations???

This will be in an all out weekend toy that will see no drag racing but will see some good road corse club racing several times a year.

I have heard good things about both DSS and CHP shortblocks. Personally i am going to buy a DSS 347 for my mustang. Some people say it is better just to go to your local machine shop and have them build one for you. That way if you have problems it is local.

If you do enough research you will find both good AND bad about most of the crate builders mentioned. Also remember that performance engines rarely include any type of warranty/guarantee. Some may offer it for an additional fee.

IMHO, Squeeeq is correct. Better to have a problem across town than across the country.

I had a local machine shop do the work on my block. My family has been doing business with them for about 25+ years with never a problem. I did my own assembly after verifying all specs and doing the clearancing for the stroker crank.

I bought my kit from a local dealer and my heads came from JD's Performance in Florida.

When I build my next engine I'll do it the same way. But I will give a look at www.adperformance.com for parts next time. From what I can see and read, they are a top notch source with excellent pricing and outstanding customer service. Talk to Brian if you decide to check them out.

It's a significant investment. Just do the best research you can. Listen to the bad as well as the good.

Good luck.

Building a healthy 351W isn't rocket science, it's attention to detail! Something every performance machine shop should be familiar with.

Although the on-line, and mail order shops are popular; your local machine shops can do as good or better, and are local should problems occur.

Either go to your local speed shop and get a recommendation for a performance machine shop, or open your phone book and make a few calls.

And keep an open mind, as your machinist may have different recommendations for your specific application.
