Question Engine ID Number

I have a Ford small block in my Cobra. The only number I found was on a flat pad above the bell housing. The number looks like 87154225. Not sure if the second number is a 7 or something else as the number is very faint. Anyway, I would like to find out whay year the engine is as well as if it is a 289 or 302 so I can get busy getting the right parts to go from the auto traans to the 5 speed I have from a 92 Mustang.

Thanks,
Greg

Greg,
The number on the pad at the rear top of the engine is the sequential serial number of the car it came out of, the last digits of the VIN.

To see the year of the block you'll need to pull the starter. There is a four digit code cast in the block near top rear of the starter, for example, E7TE.

E=1980 decade
7=1987
T=truck division
E=engineering code for an engine

The E7TE was used from '87 'til '91, I think.

HTH, Ed
