Default 302 Crate GT40 Heads/345HP

New to the fourm. I am thinking of buying a crate 302 with GT40 aluminum heads 345HP (B303 cam) and have a few questions.

Does anyone have some experience with this engine?

1. Does the idle have a lope?
2. Will this engine work with a stock C4 and stock converter?
3. What is the idle using a non efi, carb.(600CFM) setup?
4. Where is the best place (price) to buy a Ford crate engine?

I would like to replace the engine in my 40 Ford coupe with above.
The coupe has a stock 302 (pre 1976) with a Edelbrock 600 CFM carb, headers and has a stock C4.

Not looking to race but would like a nice engine that sounds good.

All Ford.....

Thank you!

I don't have any experience with it...but by looking at the specs, I could make some comments.

1. Lope is determined a lot by duration and by lobe separation. I think the duration for this cam at .050" is 224 degrees....coupled with a 109 degree lobe separation, this could probably be a cam with a lope stronger than a stock 5.0L cam....it would be noticeable. Definitely not radical or rough though.

2. Yes. Cam specs give a range from 2200 to 5200....this could be used with a stock torque converter....although a little stall could help get you into the powerband quicker.

3. I'd say this would idle at around 800 rpm.

4. You can buy this engine from Jegs or Summit Racing...

Cool 4T...

Welcome to the gang.

I have the XB3 crate motor in my Cobra, now about 2600 miles; answers are as follows:

1. Yes, it lopes. Will give you a woody at idle speed and the right exhaust system, of which sidepipes are king.

2. Yes, autos are fine. Use a slightly higher stall than stock to take advantage of the cam's properties (in @ 2600, done by 6000)

3. Mine idles, reliably, at about 1000 rpm - but I've got an aluminum flywheel and could still drop that another 100 rpm or so. With an auto it will probably be about the same. I've got a 650 cfm mechanical Speed Demon on it.

4. Got mine from Diversified Motorsports in Michigan - $2900, delivered to my door. Don't have their email or website at the moment, but will post it when I do.

Engine is really excellent - sounds great, revs like a sprint car (alum. flywheel and 4.09's in the Jag rear), keeps weight down and can still scare the sh!t outta anybody thru the first 3 gears. Get a rev limiter in your car - you're gonna need it.

4T,

I have the comp cams equivalent of a B303 in my 302, also with a 600 CFM vac. sec holley, but using Dart (WP windsor Jr.) heads.

It does have a nice lope at idle, ~800 RPM makes a nice shake.

You'll find power a little weak below about 2K RPM, but pulls strong nearly to 6K, and has a great howl as it comes on the cam.

Can say much regarding the C4, other than my gut tells me with such a light car you might not want to push the stall up to far - it may affect drivability and cause some cornering issues.

Best of Luck

I run a 392, but a friend has your exact motor in his cobra. It is a great quick revving engine. Sounds great, no maintenence and has more than enough power is these light cars. Has a great idle and sounds like thunder once on the cam.
Try RaceParts Distribution in North Carolina. They are a big dealer for Ford Racing.
Just my 2 cents

Default Thanks

Thanks blykins, Turnpike boy, NeedAntiVenom and Goober. You guys are a great help.

I plan on buying the 302 345HP (XB3) crate engine. I do have a question about the cam lobe separation. Blykins, where can I find the LS in print. I have looked for it in the Ford Racing catalog but could not find it.

Again, thanks to all.

Lightbulb Okay, 4T...

...this should help you some.

The place I bought my engine from was www.buyfordmotorsport.com - this is Diversified Marketing.

Cam specs: duration @.050" = 224 * both intake & exhaust
lift w/ 1.6 ratio rocker = .480" both i & e
Lobe centers: 107* intake, 117* exhaust

Check with the website above and you'll find anything you wanna know about this engine.
