Thoughts on the 392CID (430hp) crate...?

I built my own to about the same specs. I can tell you that If I were to start over I would buy that motor instead of building my own. I just WANTED to build it. Money is about the same. Great motor, very streetable. In addition to the carb, you'll need a clutch and flywheel. 9.7:1 comp is pump premium. Shop around, there's lots of FRPP dealers, some even offer a discount. Forte's Parts is an advertiser here on the forum and I'm pretty sure he discounts. HTH, Ed |
392 engine
If I were to buy that engine, I would go to another source that builds that exact same engine except for the heads. You can buy them for about the same money, and some even have better parts than the factory crate motor. Not that's there's anything wrong with the ford heads, it's just that they were designed for the 302 and 351. I have read a lot of articles on that engine, and when the engine was on the dyno it always made 450hp or more, instead of the 430hp that ford advertised. But, if you put a set of AFR185 heads on it the hp jumped to 540!!
That's serious hp for a small block on pump gas. That's more power than most of the big blocks that are out there. I know it's not nice to say, but it's true. |

I have been running mine for two years, runs and sounds great. There have been some posts in the past where a few problems were noted. I installed a DannyBee cam thrust bearing and new Canton pan, it does come with a flywheel. If you shop around you can purchase the motor with delivery for just under $6,000. |
Guys, I have had several "crate" 392 from Ford, my only issue is NO WARRANTY and I have had problems. My recommendation is you get what you pay for so you might look at Keith Craft or Roush we sell both and they come with a warranty 2 years or 24 thousand miles.

Crate motors are popular and lots of folks run them. Me, I won't spend that kind of money on any thing that does not have a warranty. No matter who you go through, have the motor broke in and tuned on the dyno BEFORE it is installed. Many of the better builders will do this as standard operating procedure any ways.
