too much fuel pressure?

i have pulled the "fuel pump-to-carb" fuel line a number of times after the engine was turned off to pull the top of the carb off and change the secondary jets. when i pull the fuel line there is an excessive amount of pressure in the line that insists on squirting all over the engine until it shortly calms down and stops. im wondering if it is normal to have such a high fuel pressure and what/if it can cause any potential problems with the way the engine runs, and if it might adversly affect the performance of my carburator. edelbrock #1406 (600cfm) 4 barrel. i just have a stock mechanical fuel pump, it could be 30 years old for all i know. could a defective/worn out fuel pump allow too much fuel pressure? vice versa? thanks for the help and time.

Retaining fuel pressure in the line is a good sign. It means that fuel is not leaking into the float bowl when it's not needed. There's just residual pressure in the lines.

If you're concerned about "excessive" pressure, check it with a gage.

This is good. Means the check ball in the pump is still good.

Imagine what it would be like if the pump drained down everytime you turned off the car, it would have to pump fuel from the tank to the carb each time you started.

Ever run the tank dry? How much cranking did ya have to do to get the engine started?

Maybe to satisfy your own curiosity, you should install an inline fuel pressure gauge. I believe 6 1/2- 7 lbs is was you want.
