harmonic Balancers ?

how important is a good harmonic balancer? I have the old one off of my 30 year old block... would it be safe to use it over again on the new block in building? it's a much higher performance engine. I've never looked into the workings of a balancer, so i dont quite understand its importance altogether. someone shed some light on this one for me, lemme know the importance of a good/new balancer. thanks.

how do i determine what SIZE harmonic balancer to use ??

The person doing the machine work should be able to help with these questions. He should be able to answer them when you talk about balancing the engine.
