Help . . . . 302 or 351?
On a longblock, how would you tell the difference between a 302 and a 351 by sight?

Width between valve covers. I have a 351 with a little over 11 inch between the valve covers, A 302 would be less. Jim

289 and 302 have a very narrow intake. The 351 is much wider.

according to the Ford Racing book, the 351 Windsor has a beffier block than the 289/302, and the main journals (3.00") are larger then the 289/302 (2.25") The 351w is also a little wider at the top.

There must be markings or numbers on the block that would give the answer, isn't there? Casting number is D9TE-AB on the block Casting number is E7TE on the heads Please help . . . . |
It is a mixed parts engine. D9 stands for 79 and E7 stands for 87. If you pull the intake it will show in the valley the engine size. Did you mesure the intake width?

Do what I do when junk yard hunting or looking for engines,bring a small tape measure with your........I measure the width across the two front intake manifold bolts........351-W is 9.5 inches across center to center,302 is 7.5 inches...........This will tell you what block you are looking at since the 351-W and 302 heads are interchangeable........heads #'s and markings are under the valve cover,the only way to be sure of the heads are pull a valve cover............

On most of the blocks the engine size is cast into the valley under the intake such as 351-4w or 302-w or 302- wf or 289-4-wf

You DO have a 351-W block, before posting the measurements I went in the shop and measured my 351-W in my Mustang and also measured a 1970 302 longblock I have sitting on an engine stand,D9 denotes a 1979 block........Most blocks I'm familar with are the earlier blocks (1969 to 1974) and they usually have 351 cast in the lifter valley somewhere,the newer blocks may not have this number,but you do have a 351-W block,as far as the heads,they were used on both the 351-W and 302....... I am sure that David is right. Sounds like a 351. I have some pics of a 302 and a 351 next to each other on this site. You can see how much taller and wider the 351 is when compared to the 302. Check out the pictures and you can compare yours to them if it will help you.
If you look at the front of both engines you can see that the 302 block stops just above the water pump and timing cover. The 351 due to the longer stroke is a few inches above the pump and cover. A really easy way to id small blocks, 289&302 to a 351. Hope this helps. Remember that the newer blocks are much thinner in the walls than the older ones. |

I checked out this pics of yours. Mine stops just at the top of the water pump like a 302, but it is wider and taller like the 351w is though. I guess this is just a different year 351w block with the height difference I see, maybe? I did measure the two front most intake bolt holes and they are 9.5" apart from eachother, so this is a positive for 351w. Simple question, 351w is considered a small block, true? |

Yes a 351W is a small block in the Windsor class of engines. |
I can't immagine a 351w with the water pump even with the deck, It seems to me as though this would require a whole diffrent water pump/timing chain cover assembly. On a 351 the water passeges for the pump on the block are a little more than an inch lower than the deck. On evrey windsor I've seen 351 was clearley cast in the lifter valley. 351 should also be cast into the heads if they are original, the number would be alone with no letters between two valve of the springs, of course on my other 351 has "302" is cast into the heads, so the heads will be of little help. I admit I have no idea what the 5.8 casting numbers look like. It hurts to say it, but chevy casting numbers make much more sense than ford's.

I have looked over the valley many many times now, I can not find any marking of a 351 anywhere.
(laughing to myself) I will admit I can not tell a sbf from a bbf, could this have any chance of being a bbf possibly? |
Does it look anything like the pictures you looked at?

Does it have inline valves? If the valves are not in a straight line its a big block or cleveland (not exactley sure what catigory a 351c belongs in)
