Default Not what I thought it was....

So I just bought my block a while ago from a fellow who said it came from an 86 Crown Vic.

Well, that may have been true, but I only just checked the casting number on the block (I know, I know, should have done it before, but it was so dirty that I couldn't see it, and only just got around to grinding it clean), and the casting number is D4AE!! A D4AE isn't native to an 86 Crown Vic, is it? Surely there was a later 351W casting that would have been in an 86 Vic....an E3AE or something?

So I grabbed a rod, and it says D6OE. Has this thing has been rebuilt already? Did D6OE rods come in a D4AE block from the factory?

Is that going to cause me any problems?? Edit: it was just 69-70 blocks that had the shorter deck height, right? 74 is still 9.503"?

Thanks
Dan

Dan;

Is it a 302 or 351 block?????? You are correct about the deck height on the 351 blocks,302s should all be the same deck height..........

David,

It's definitely from a 351W block (stamped in the lifter valley). I just thought a block from an 86 Crown Vic, if this was the vehicle it ORIGINALLY came from, would have a casting number later than D4xx.

Also ... is it normal for D6xx rods to be found in a D4xx block from the factory? Or has this thing been opened up before and had rods swapped, etc..?

Dan

Dan;

It is a 1974 351-W block with 1976 ords in a 86 Crown Vic.......... Sounds like a rebuilt engine to me..... Check the bore,see if it is still 4.00 or 4.030 or more.........

The only other thing I could think of is that at some point in time someone swapped out the engines,so it is possible that it has not been rebuilt,but I would not bet on it.........

If the engine has been rebuilt,it is not uncommon to see D-6 rods or any other year stuff in a rebuilt motor........The shops use what they have on hand at the time,nothing wrong with that....... The rods are the same,just made in a different year than the block.........

BTW; Ford must have made a gazillion 351-Ws in 1974,I have seen at least two 1978 LTDs that had D-4 engines in them and they came that way from the factory.......They used the supply on hand regardless of the year it was made in.........
