Exclamation Gilmer belt is to quite

Just recently on the 'Australian Forum' a "Thread' was placed with one of our members there wanting to quieten their Gilmer Belt noise down.

There's been some good responses but..

I want my belt to make that whistling/hum noise.

The belt is tightened to specification. All of the pulleys are alloy.

It is dead quite.

Anyone have some ideas on how you can get that hum happening. Gear drive is an option. But thought I may be able to cut drill etc. to get that whistle from the current set up.

Cheers

Bernie

Bernie Tell him to if there air small drill holes in the pulleys. This is used to get the air from between the belt and pulley and keep it quiet. As far as whine, couple ideas, 1 see Craig M about to turbos, 2 but a blower on the car, or 3 the biggy tell himto drive at 120 mph and listen for the whine behind him with thw flashing lights, that's my favorate. How can he hear over the side pipes? Have fun Rick Lake

Thanks Rick I may re; 'Thread' this over on the ALL COBRA TALK to see if anyone has played around with the Gilmer Drive to get it to hum.

I sure like the sound of ther turbos or the gear drive etc. and thought that the Gilmer drive should be whistling. Perhaps I can do something to make it hum.

Hey no big deal I just thought of it when I saw the Thread on the Australian Forum wanting to quieten his Cobra.

Take care and watch that George A at the Run N Gun. Sorry I cannot make it this year.

Cheers

Bernie

Hotfingrs

Thanks for the advice. I will try that.

Is this something that is trial and error. Should I cut just a few out to start? Maybe, one or two or just go at it and cut every second rib off??

I moved the Thread over to "ALL COBRA TALK" so just ignore that over there.

Cheers

Bernie

Hotfingrs

Hey don't worry they take it out of me when I'm over there all the time. If their not trying to fill me with Georgia Moon its something else.

Now on the other hand the cutting of a rib out did seem to make sense?

Cheers

What is the gilmer drive on? I have these on dry sump belts and fuel injection, but dont notice any wine/hum. (tho the car is very noisy).

Maybe you only get the wine from supercharged cars as the belts are much wider?

Hi Bevan

I'm running a stroker 351w. You may pick a photo up on my gallery/forum. Victor Jnr. Holley 750 etc.

Look no big deal it's just a thought I had about making some noise after a member in Australia "Posted" that they had to much noise.

I checked my engine and found the belt was dead quite. So I thought ... hell lets see if we can get it to humm.

One "Post" suggested cutting out every second tooth. I thought yeah that makes some sense. I may shave one or two teeth down 50% to see if it traps air and makes a whistle/hum.

I have a spare belt so who cares.

Bevan I'm in Auckland next Friday for five days. Think I mentioned the sailing on the harbour deal our company set up.

Any thoughts on shops I should visit in the area?

Thanks for replying.

Cheers

Bernie

I think that any change to the belt will weaken it, so that is definately a bad idea. The thread I think is just a joke.

I am sure that the big belts trap the air, narrow ones would escape out the sides.

The other option is probably to run plates on front and back of drive wheels?

Shops in Auckland - not sure to be honest, I am in Wellington. There is not a lot of car related stuff, other than a copule of transport museums.

Have fun sailing.
