When you reassemble the pump spring into the casting bore, the cup plug is inserted so that the end of the sping is in the cup before the plug is replaced, and is flush with the casting. I once reveresed this in error and exploded an oil filter at start up because the spring was to tightly compressed and did not provide ANY pressure relief as it is designed to do.
