Stroked 351W
Does anyone have any feedback on a 351W stroked to a 396 crate motor? Also on companies that provide these. ( Coasthigh.com, Fordcobraengines.com, etc)

Chuck, I think the FMS crate motors don't have a warranty. A lot of guys buy them though. Why stop at 396? Take her on out to 427 and get it done!

I have heard stories that there can be problems when they are strked to a 427.

Chuck. Yes the 427 does not have as good of a rod ratio and also I beleive the piston pin will end up in the oil ring groove. I just built a 408 with the 4.00" stroke crank and 6.250" rod. Works out to be a decent rod ratio and the piston pin is just below the oil ring. To short of a rod ratio will cause more side load and wear on the cylinders and oil consumption when the pin is in the oil ring groove.

Only feedback I can give you on a 427 stroked windsor especially from Kieth Craft is making a good tire choice. You will go thru a few real quick other than that no problems and man she is awesome.

Don & Jeff,
Both of you are correct.Below is what Keith had to say about it.
Don has an aftermarket Dart block.
" 427 stroker
These stroker combinations do not work real well. We have had some sent in for repair. This is a 4.187 stroke with a 6.125 rod and makes for a terrible rod ratio. This is just to much stroke in a stock block. we do some 4.100 stoke cranks but us a 6.200 rod and these have worked out fine. We do a lot of the 4.000 stroke engines with a 4.030 or 4.040 bore for 408 to 410 cubic inches. If you do an aftermarket block and do a 4.125 bore with a 4.00 stroke this gives you 427C.I. but in a much nicer designed package. Thanks and good luck, Keith"

OK. so with respect to crate motors what is the highest you can stroke a 351W and still have a good rod ratio? Generally speaking of course. All this feedback is greatly appreciated.

There are a LOT of 427 Windsors on the road. Real Cobra men don't wear panties. We don't need no stinking rod ratio! Put in de gas, stomp the pedal and hold your a$$!

Tony Radford
Stock bore & stroke
Engine: Ford 351-W (4" bore, 3.5" stroke) with Super Victor #2924 intake, 850 cfm carb, Victor CNC heads #7729, Crane mechanical roller cam #368211 and JE pistons with 13.25:1 compression
Results: 617 horsepower at 7500 rpm and 464 ft/lbs. of torque at 6500 rpm
even cut the compression ratio down 1.5:1 to run pump gas and still put a healthy HP rating. better than cramming your pistons into your cylinder walls.

Thanks GWC. I can't believe that spinning a motor to 7K +, 13.25:1 compression and solid roller is going to outlast my stroker. Maybe your cylinder walls will mic out better, but when it goes, there won't be anything left.

You missed my point. I run a stock lower end in my
351w with good heads and intake. I might be stroking it in the future but for now i'm going to get all the life i can out of my stock lower end. That combo probably had a Dart Iron eagle for a block, that combo was listed here>

The problem with the 427w is with wear and longevity. Alot of the people who claim to have no problems, have these in a car that will probaby never see more then 20K miles and is driven once every 2 or 3 months, or is still a low mileage motor. Your not going to see problems at first with any stroker motor. Given two motors with same mileage a 408 is going to show less wear then the 427. As one person said the rod ratio is horrible in a 427 not to mention the oil rings are usually in the wrist pin. The only way your not going to have it in the wrist pin is moving the top ring less then .200 clearance from the top of the piston or running a shorter rod. Either way you have a problem, just pick your poison.

I hear you. I had a stock stroke Windsor in my car at purchase putting a tad over 400 HP and put around 9K miles on it in a year and a half. Last year I replaced it with a 427 Windsor stroker built by Southern Automotive here in the Atlanta area. It is built with a Forged rotating assembly from Scat and Keith Black with light-weight H-beam rods. The compression is 9.8:1, Vic. Jr. intake, BG Might Demon carb and not terribly-radical solid cam. I put an average of 7K miles a year on the car and run it pretty hard. The street manners are excellent, which is necessary with Atlanta traffic being what it is. The performance of this new motor with respects to the first one is pretty significant. I don't know how long I should expect the motor to survive, but for me, the whole purpose of the car was to push the extreme in driving excitement. I think you can use analysis to rationalize anything you want to. The real question is how many Windsor strokers fail or wear out at 427 VS 408, 418 etc. Who was it that said "you don't know how far you can go until you've gone too far"?

I am leaning towards a 396W with a 9.75:1 compression prepped to 475 HP. Runs on pump gas, a little more conservative in the rod ratio issue, and power output in line with the original 427's. I am going to price this out with a local builder and weigh out the crate vs build decision.
