Default Bits & Pieces

Guys;
Can any of the good engine builders tell me if the auto store Woodruff keys are good enough for crankshaft use, or is a special hardened key required? Same for the dist. gear pin. I plan to drill out the shaft and install a bigger pin, but will a standard pin work? Thanks in advance.

I'd go to a machine shop and get them....they sell woodruff keys at Lowes and Home Depot....but I don't know if they're hardened. I would want the stoutest thing I could find.

They are mild steel Bill. As long as the replacement keys are steel, you are fine. Don't use the copper or brass ones.

As far as the pin in the dist. shaft. Get the 3/16 Chevy pin from MSD. It is much stronger than the standard roll pins sold at most auto supply stores. In case you forgot that pin is NOT a shear pin.

Racer X;
I had planned to use a 3/16" pin on my MSD dist. to overcome the extra strain placed on the gear by my HV oil pump. I'll get it from MSD. Thanks.
