Slecting a Gear Reduction Starter for 351W
I have the 385HP 351W FMS Crate engine with a Tremic 5 speed. I do not know the tooth count on the fly wheel. I did not build the car. Should I assume that a starter for 157 tooth fly wheel? What about this 3/8 or 3/4" offset question?
According to the Summit catalog I would select the PWM-9503 if I wanted a PowerMaster starter. What about the newly listed FMS racing mini-starter? I believe it is for SBs with 157 teeth flywheels. Is it a gear reduction? How do you decide between the 1.1 kw or 1.6 kw super torque version?

As far as the flywheel, I'd ask the builder. The best starters out there are the Hitachi type. I use a CSI mini starter and it has served me well for over 20k miles.

I probably can not reach the builder. Can you tell the flywheel tooth count after removing and looking at the current OE starter?
What brands are "Hitachi" types? And why are they better?

The two illustrated ones on the left are the Hitachi gear reduction type. The others are permanent magnet planatary gear type.

my current 16 degree initial; is gagging my stock ford starter.
My "serious" ford expert tell me the ford racing gear starter is superb and cheaper than the other reduction starters. It number four on my update list

I need some advice - want to order a starter
Has any one installed the Ford Racing starters? Any recommendation on the Ford starters (1.1 or 1.6 kw motors) or possibly a Powermaster would be helpful. Thanks

Cobra 29
My FMS crate engine came with the 157 tooth flywheel. I also used the CSI mini starter. It is compact and has an adjustable mounting flange so you can rotate the starter motor to a position that you want to clear your frame or header ect.

So I can avoid counting flywheel teeth
I appreciate all the information so far as I attempt to understand whether I have a 164 tooth or 157 tooth flywheel. I did not build the car but it has a 385HP 351W crate engine with tremic so I believe it has the 157 tooth flywheel.
Can someone explain the relationship of the Ford SB starter offsets of 3/8" and 3/4" and the flywheel diameter? If I can understand this relationship I can remove my starter and measure this offset and determine if I have the larger diameter flywheel (164) or the smaller (157). Thanks

I just bought a Ford gear reduction starter for my 65 Vintage racer,331 cu in,13.0 to 1 compression.......A buddy told me about using this starter,he has had one on his 65 GT-350 race car for the last 9 years with NO problems,he's running a 331 cu in also,14 to 1 compression, dynoed at 585 hp, it is a Ford starter, ask for a starter for a 1993 T-bird with a 302 cu in engine, they are $70.00 plus $15.00 core charge at O'Riellys.....
