Question 351W Water Pump?

As I am shopping for a water pump (1969 351W block), I noticed that the 69 pump is different than the 351W pumps for 1970 and on. What is the difference? I thought all 351W blocks were the same (except for deck height). Any thoughts?

Haz,

Some of the pumps have their intake on the right hand side and others on the left hand side. Just make sure that your radiator has its bottom outlet on the side of your pumps intake or you will have to fabricate a hose-steel tube connection to bring it back across. I believe it was Roscoe that spent a lot of time trying to find out why he had a heating problem and finally found he had the wrong pump on his engine. I don't remember if he has the 351 Cleveland or Windsor, but the factory had mis-numbered his pump and he had the one for the other engine all that time.

What had occurred was I ordered a Milodon pump for my 351W and got one for a 351C in a 351W box. It bolted up but the flow was screwed up. I tore the engine down and went crazy trying to figure it all out.

I finally went with the Edelbrock pump and have had no problems since. The Edelbrock also has threaded ports so you can block the heater port and use AN fittings for the bypass.

Right click....save as. Good to know.

I recently fixed a water neck leak and had to fabricate the correct bypass from another pre-formed hose. Basically went to my local independent autoparts supplier and said "This is basically what I need." We went through his Goodyear catalog and found one example of 5/8" that had all sorts of preformed bends in it. Cut-off both ends and the middle part works perfectly without any kinks that may inhibit water flow. [b]Had I had a pump with provisions for threaded fittings, it would have been easier to route.

Thanks for the info guys, I thought it might have to do with the pump intake. I don't have my radiator yet, so I guess I'll wait to order the pump.

Hmmm. I have a stock water pump on my 69 351W (passenger side inlet) but the PO put on a brand new alum radiator with the outlet on the driver's side just before selling. If I upgrade to a new waterpump, I wonder if an Edlebrock victor series water pump from 1970 would fit ok on my block.

69 Mach 1,

Iam not sure about the victor series water pump, but if it won't work and you have room you might do what a friend of mine did. He brought the hose out of the bottom of the radiator and made a curve so it didn't pinch shut. Then he got a stainless steel pipe and put it in the end of the hose and ran it across to the other side of the engine down at the bottom. He then took a hose from the water pump and brought it down to the pipe and hooked it up and he has ran this for a few years with no problems.
I am sure some of the others can tell you about the water pump and if it will work. I have a Flow Kooler aluminum pump on mine and had the radiator built with the outlet on the passenger side.

From the Edelbrock site on Victor Series:

Small-Block Ford
For 1965-68 289, 1968-69 302, 1969 351-W (5/8" pilot shaft) ....#8841
Polished #8841 ....#8846
PermaStar finish #8841 ....#88412
Right-hand inlet with back plate. Dimension from casting to hub: 5.42". Inlet diameter: 1.78".

I guess you can call Edelbrock to answer your question on the right/left thing.

For right side, you can have your radiator modified with a -16AN fitting. Get a Goza adapter for the pump: hose to AN. And run AN braided hose. You will only use a small 4" piece of hose for the adapter. I run -16AN top and bottom.

Whatever you do DON'T USE SILICONE on your waterpump gaskets. When I tore down my engine while looking for the overheating problem, I found pieces of silicone stuck in the small ports of my AFR's. One piece looked like a bass lure. Use permatex, the old standard.

I just got an email from Edelbrock and there is a difference between the 69 and 70 waterpumps. the tech guy who responded also recommmended switching the outlet to the other side, which I did not know was possible. I contacted the guy who built my engine and he told me not to worry as he used a special radiator hose from Dayco pre-formed for my application.

My lower water pump fitting is on the drivers side, and the lower radiator fitting is on the passenger side. I have a rather long hose that snakes across. Never had a problem.

Someone out there correct me if I am wrong, but isn't there also an issue of the pump rotation? I believe that some of the small block engines used a reverse rotation water pump.

There should be no problem switching the water pump of a Windsor from a passenger side feed to a driver side feed. The timing covers for both years are the same, so bolting up isn't a problem. As for the reverse rotation thing, that wasn't until the advent of the serpentine belt (1980s?). Following this train of thought, I would much rather match my pump intake side to the radiator which is in my car than run a crazy long hose to the other side, or resort to welding and soldering.

the email I got from an Edelbrock tech guy says that there is a difference between the two with the hub height being higher in one of the applications as opposed to the other.

your proposed solution would require me pulling a brand new, aftermarket alum radiator in order to get the radiator outlet on the same side as the water pump inlet. I think that the costs outweigh the benefits.

Sorry Mach, maybe I wasn't clear. What I mean is that functionally there are no differences between the two, other than the inlets are on opposite sides. I don't dispute that there may be a miner hub (water pump, not engine) height differences between the two and Edelbrock should know. However that difference in the distance created between the two pulleys shouldn't even necessitate a different belt. As for the radiator thing; what I said was match the water pump to what ever radiator you already have, not vies-versa. So if your radiator’s outlet is on the driver’s side, get a water pump to match. Because it won’t cause any problems, putting a matching water pump on, as opposed to a crazy long hose, is a no brainer.

Can someone veriy that the H2O pump is:
Reverse rotation for a serpentine setup
Standard if using pulleys

Should there be any fit problems with any of these? I just installed a standard on mine as I am running pulleys (alt,H2o) and seem to have a fit problem as coolant is running right out from behind the pump. I will be removing Saturday to see what is causing this. I would think all pumps should interchange. Mine motor is a 5.0 87.

Edelbrock part number from summit racing
edl-8841
I had my 351w rebuilt and didnt want to put a stock water pump on so this is what my engine builder got for me. Made a big difference on how well it stayed cool.
the shorter hose also helped out a lot. everything bolted right up pump heights were the same and everything
